Chapter 11 - The Secret Vault

Vance's eyes narrowed, shifting from Julian toward the dark interior of the car. ""What did the child say?""
Lily leaned forward, holding the worn bear tightly. Her voice was steady, carried by the stubborn bravery she had inherited from her mother. ""Mommy told me the bank people were bad. She took me to the church garden. Under the angel with the broken wing.""
Julian felt a lightning bolt of realization strike his spine. St. Jude Memorial Chapel—the small cemetery adjacent to the hospital where Elena spent her final days. In the center of the memorial garden stood an antique marble statue of an archangel, its left wing clipped by lightning decades ago.
Elena hadn't trusted financial institutions. She had hidden her final contingency where only someone who truly loved her would know to look.
Vance's face darkened instantly. The condescending lawyer disappeared, replaced by a ruthless enforcer. ""Take them. Secure the child and search the vehicle.""
""Julian, run!"" Claire screamed, lunging forward and tackling the nearest security guard around the waist, knocking him into the brick wall.
Julian didn't hesitate. He dove into the driver's seat, pulled the emergency gear release, and threw the damaged sedan into reverse. Tires smoked against wet gravel as he backed down the dark alley toward the rear access ramp leading directly to the abandoned river docks.

Gunfire shattered the night—not standard police weapons, but suppressed tactical rounds that pinged against the car's trunk and chassis. Vance wasn't trying to arrest them anymore. He was tying up loose ends.
Julian spun the wheel, sending the car sliding sideways through an old corrugated gate, crashing out onto the open, moonlit pier beside the churning river waters. Behind him, headlights roared in pursuit.
