Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Elena

The warehouse alley seemed to spin around Julian. The damp river breeze felt freezing against his face.
""What did you say?"" Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of an avalanche.
""Elena discovered that the Montgomery Pharmaceutical Group was running unauthorized clinical trials through St. Jude's oncology wing,"" Claire explained rapidly, rubbing her bruised wrist. ""She threatened to go to the federal authorities. A week later, her medication was swapped with an aggressive dosage that induced fatal cardiac arrest. Dr. Chen refused to sign the falsified autopsy report, so Rebecca's family ruined her career and ran her out of medicine.""
""And you?"" Julian pressed, his grip tightening on her sleeve. ""Who are you, Claire?""
""I'm Dr. Chen's sister,"" Claire confessed, her eyes shining with unshed tears. ""I took this nanny job under an alias to gather proof against Rebecca. When I saw she was planning to send Lily away to a remote facility to keep her silent, I couldn't let it happen. Lily knows something, Julian. Elena gave her something before she went into the ICU.""
Julian looked into the backseat. Lily was clutching her faded stuffed bear, her big hazel eyes wide with quiet understanding.
""Lily bug,"" Julian said gently, kneeling beside the shattered car door. ""Do you remember the day Mommy went to the hospital for the last time?""
Lily nodded slowly. ""Mommy put a tiny shiny key inside Mr. Paws. She told me never to tell anyone, not even Daddy, until I was big.""

Julian reached out, touching the worn stitching along the seam of the stuffed bear's back. Inside the polyester filling, his fingertips brushed against a hard, rectangular piece of metal. It wasn't a standard key; it was a high-security safe deposit key engraved with a seven-digit serial number.
Suddenly, bright halogen headlights flooded the alley entrance. Two black SUVs blocked the narrow exit path, their engines rumbling like predators closing in for the kill.
