Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Cold Tile

Emma’s hands shook as she slid the platinum band from her finger. For five months, she had lived inside a gilded lie, believing Julian’s whispered promises while he quietly entertained another woman in their penthouse suite. The realization had struck like ice water when she walked in unannounced, clutching catering menus for a wedding that would never happen. She watched the woman smirk from the plush sofa, wrapped in silk, whispering cruel words of victory.

Julian hadn’t even bothered to stand up. His apology had been a hollow shrug, accompanied by a cold excuse about business alliances and impulsive infatuations. Emma hadn’t raised her voice. The fury inside her was far too cold for shouting. She simply took the diamond ring, walked to the threshold, and let it fall onto the invitations strewn across the plush rug. The quiet click of the band striking the floor sounded like a tomb slamming shut.

Outside, the autumn wind stung her bare neck. She hurried down into the street, her white designer gown feeling less like a celebration and more like a shroud. She walked until her heels gave out, collapsing onto the concrete embankment overlooking the city skyline. Alone under the glow of Manhattan’s distant towers, she finally broke, burying her face into her hands. Her muffled sobs were swept away into the dark river below.

A low growl cut through the stillness. A sleek black Maybach pulled against the curb, its tinted windows gleaming beneath the amber streetlamps. Heavy footsteps sounded against the cobblestones, rapid and deliberate. Emma didn't look up, too humiliated to care who saw her unraveling.

"What happened?" a voice demanded, rich and commanding.

Before she could form words, the cold night vanished beneath a heavy layer of cashmere and tailored fur. Marcus Vance knelt before her, his dark eyes ablaze with controlled fury, his tattooed hands steady upon her trembling shoulders. As Emma looked into his fierce gaze, Marcus caught the glint of blood on her bare fingers where her ring had torn the skin.

"Julian did this, didn’t he?" Marcus murmured, his jaw hardening into granite.

Emma choked on a breath, unable to speak, but her silence confirmed his worst suspicion. Marcus pulled out his encrypted phone, dialing a single number without taking his eyes off her.

"Cancel the Sterling merger immediately," Marcus commanded into the receiver, his tone lethal. "And leak the audit files to the federal prosecutor. Ruin him by sunrise."
