Chapter 5 - Hidden Inheritance

The grandfather clock in the study struck two in the morning. Outside, sheets of rain lashed against the shatterproof windows, but inside, the only sound was the soft crackle of birch logs in the fireplace. Emma sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sipping hot chamomile tea that did nothing to quell the racing beat of her heart.

Marcus stood over a vast mahogany desk covered in blueprints, financial ledgers, and decrypted satellite files. He had changed into a dark charcoal sweater, the tattoos along his neck peeking through the collar.

"Your mother was Evelyn Vance-Cross," Marcus said slowly, dropping a faded leather binder in front of Emma. "She was my father's younger half-sister. She ran the primary European assets of our family trust before going off the grid twenty years ago."

Emma’s mind spun violently. "Your... your aunt? That means..."

"We aren't related by blood," Marcus clarified immediately, his intense eyes locking onto hers. "I was adopted into the Vance family by the patriarch when I was twelve after my parents died. But your mother carried the legitimate bloodline. She owned thirty percent of the sovereign wealth fund that Julian’s father and his partners have been trying to plunder for decades."

The puzzle pieces began falling into place with terrifying clarity. Julian had never loved her. His courtships, the expensive gifts, the proposal—it had all been a calculated performance designed to acquire her signature on prenuptial trusts that would forfeit her claim to Evelyn's estate.

"Julian’s father orchestrated our engagement," Emma whispered, tears of betrayal threatening to return, but anger held them back. "They knew about the inheritance all along. I was just a legal signature to them."

"Julian was merely their pawn," Marcus said coldly. "His family was on the brink of bankruptcy until they struck a deal with the Lucian Syndicate to seize your shares. Tonight, when you walked away and tossed that ring on the floor, their multi-billion-dollar acquisition died."

Carter entered the library quietly, carrying a black leather portfolio. "Boss, we pulled the phone logs from Julian's car. He just made a call to a private jet terminal in Teterboro. Someone is flying in from Geneva tonight to handle this personally."

Marcus looked at the manifest name on Carter’s tablet, and his jaw clenched. "Victor Lucian himself," Marcus muttered. Then he turned to Emma, his eyes gleaming with dangerous resolve. "He thinks you're a helpless heiress hiding in my shadow. It’s time we prove him wrong."

Before Emma could respond, the power abruptly cut. The crackling fire was instantly the only source of light, and from the floorboards below, the muffled shriek of a tripped proximity wire vibrated through the foundation.
