Chapter 14 - Sins of the Patriarch

"What do you mean?" Emma cried, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who ordered my mother's death?"

Marcus closed his eyes, a muscle ticking in his jaw as if he were trying to swallow poison. "My adoptive father. Alexander Vance."

The name hung in the room like a death sentence. Alexander Vance was the legendary patriarch who had built the Vance industrial conglomerate from scrap—the man who had plucked Marcus from the streets and molded him into his ruthless corporate heir before dying of supposed natural causes two years ago.

"Alexander wanted total control of the sovereign trust," Agent Miller explained quietly from the doorway. "Your mother refused to allow him to use the funds to finance weapons distribution in Eastern Europe. When she threatened to take the assets to the federal authorities, Alexander contracted the Lucian Syndicate to orchestrate the boating accident that killed her."

Emma sank back onto the steel chair, the room spinning around her. The man who had saved her tonight, the man whose coat she was wearing, was the son of the monster who had murdered her mother.

"Did you know?" Emma asked, her voice cracking as she stared at Marcus. "When you pulled up to that embankment tonight... when you took me into your house... did you know your father killed my mother?"

Marcus stepped toward her, dropping to one knee before her chair so his eyes were level with hers. For the first time, the impenetrable wall around him was completely shattered. Pain, raw and unguarded, shone in his dark eyes.

"On my soul, Emma, I didn't know," Marcus said, his voice shaking with fierce conviction. "I knew my father was a tyrant. I knew he was corrupt. That's why I spent the last three years systematically gutting his company and stripping his allies of their power. I thought your mother died in an accident. I thought I was protecting you from Julian’s greed."

Emma looked into his eyes, searching for any flicker of deceit, any remnant of the cold manipulator Victor had claimed he was. She saw only the fierce, desperate protectiveness that had shielded her from snipers, fire, and suffocating gas.

Slowly, Emma broke the wax seal on her mother’s envelope. Inside was a single handwritten page and a small brass key.

Emma read the final lines of the letter aloud, her voice wavering: "Emma, my darling. If you are reading this, Alexander has made his move. But do not hate his son. Marcus was just a boy when he tried to warn me. He risked his life to help me hide you away. Trust Marcus. He is the only one who will ever stand between you and the fire."

Emma lowered the letter, tears blurring her vision as she looked at Marcus. "You knew me... when I was a child?"

Before Marcus could answer, the security office’s lights flickered violently. The radio on Agent Miller’s belt erupted into panicked screaming and static.

"All units, fall back! Breaching charges at the gate—it’s not Lucian! It’s the Vance private vanguard! Alexander Vance isn't dead!"
