Chapter 9 - The Federal Shadow

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and get on the floor!"

The commanding shouts bounced off the cavernous ceiling as tactical agents flooded the corridor with high-intensity flashlights, clearing corners with ruthless efficiency. Dozens of rifles were trained on the room.

Julian scrambled toward the agents on his knees, blubbering incoherently. "Help me! They tried to kill me! Marcus Vance is holding us hostage! Arrest him!"

An agent stepped forward, not looking at Julian, but directly at Marcus. She was a tall woman in an FBI field jacket, her hair pulled back in a severe bun, holding a federal badge and an official folder. She glanced at the groveling Julian, then at Victor Lucian, who was leaning against the pillar recovering his breath.

"Julian Sterling," the lead agent said in a voice like dry leaves. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Take him away."

Two agents immediately tackled Julian to the floor, twisting his arms behind his back and snapping steel cuffs onto his wrists. Julian screamed, cursing Emma and Marcus as he was hauled down the grand hallway, his designer shoes dragging uselessly against the wet floorboards.

Emma leaned against a marble pillar, dizzy from the adrenaline dump. Marcus slowly lowered his firearm, handing it directly to the lead agent by the barrel, showing no resistance whatsoever.

"Special Agent Miller," Marcus said quietly, touching the bullet graze on his arm where blood soaked the dark wool. "You're five minutes late."

"We had to wait until Victor Lucian crossed the county line into federal jurisdiction, Vance," Agent Miller replied, signaling her squad to secure Victor. "If we hit him too early, his offshore attorneys would have had him on a private flight to Zurich before we could file the indictment."

Victor was cuffed in silence. As they led him past Emma, he stopped, his cold eyes boring into hers. "You think you've won, little girl? Your mother took secrets to her grave that will drown everyone who stands near you. Marcus isn't protecting you out of love. He needs what's in that vault to save his own empire."

Marcus stepped between Emma and Victor, his physical presence completely shutting out the old man's venom. "Get him out of my house," Marcus commanded.

Agent Miller watched them leave, then turned back to Marcus and Emma. Her expression was solemn. "The raid on the Sterling family downtown office is underway, but we have a problem. The central vault where Evelyn Vance’s original deeds were stored... someone cleared it out two hours ago."
