Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gate

Emma froze on the marble staircase, clutching the banister as alarms began to pulse softly throughout the villa. Outside, high-intensity floodlights flared across the manicured grounds, bathing the pines in brilliant white light. On the security feed, three dark SUVs were parked aggressively across the driveway, their high beams blazing into the surveillance cameras.
"Marcus, please," Emma pleaded, descending two steps with terror in her eyes. "Julian’s father has judges and city marshals in his pocket. If they find me here, they will drag my family’s small logistics firm into the mud. They'll ruin my father."
"Let them try," Marcus said smoothly, completely unbothered by the flashing red lights. He didn't even adjust his cuffs. He signaled two broad-shouldered men dressed in tactical black who stood discreetly by the front gallery. "Mr. Sterling clearly forgot who owns the northern district."
Marcus stepped out onto the wide stone portico, Emma following closely in the shadows behind the reinforced glass doorway. Julian emerged from the lead SUV, his tailored white dinner jacket now rumpled, his hair unkempt, his face flushed with bourbon and entitlement. He looked nothing like the suave heir who had discarded Emma hours earlier.
"Marcus!" Julian yelled over the wind, pointing an accusatory finger toward the house. "You crossed the line tonight. You intercepted my corporate accounts, and you stole my fiancée! Give her back, and I might let your shipping permits clear customs next week."
Marcus walked slowly down the front steps, his hands shoved casually into his slacks. The cold rain misted around his broad silhouette, but he didn't flinch. He stopped just three paces away from Julian, towering over the younger heir with a chilling stillness.
"Emma is no longer your property, Julian," Marcus said, his voice carrying like thunder across the courtyard. "She gave you five months. You gave her betrayal. As for your permits, check your phone."
Julian frowned, reaching into his pocket as his device buzzed frantically. He unlocked the screen, and the color instantly drained from his cheeks. His hands began to shake uncontrollably.
"This is impossible," Julian stammered, staring up at Marcus in horror. "You can't liquidate my trust fund... it's held under an offshore sovereign trust!"

Marcus leaned forward, whispering into Julian’s ear so low only the rain heard: "The banker who holds that trust answered to me before you were even born. Leave this mountain before I strip the shoes off your feet."
Julian stumbled backward into his vehicle, barking panicked orders to his driver. The tires screeched across the wet gravel as the convoy sped away into the darkness. But before Marcus could step back inside, Emma noticed a small, concealed red laser dot hovering directly over Marcus’s heart.
