Chapter 14 - The Sovereign

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured over the manicured private gardens of the De Ville estate. The stone steps where Elena had once sat shivering in disgrace were now lined with blooming white roses.

Elena stood on the terrace, dressed in an immaculate ivory tailored suit, a cup of Earl Grey tea in her hand. On the glass table lay the morning edition of The Wall Street Journal.

The headline read: STERLING TRUST ACQUIRES DE VILLE LOGISTICS IN HISTORIC MERGER. ELENA STERLING NAMED CHAIRWOMAN.

Beneath the main article was a smaller, grim column: Julian Vance had been sentenced to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without possibility of parole for racketeering and attempted murder. Clara Ward was awaiting trial in a maximum-security mental facility.

Elena felt no joy reading about their destruction—only a profound, clean emptiness. They were ghosts of a past life that no longer held any power over her.

Footsteps approached. Alexander walked onto the terrace, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with sleeves rolled up, revealing the scars on his forearms. His side had healed, leaving only a pale silver line along his ribs.

He leaned against the railing beside her, looking out over his vast estate.

""How does it feel to be the most powerful woman on Wall Street, Ms. Sterling?"" he asked, a subtle, teasing smirk on his lips.

""It feels... peaceful,"" Elena said, setting her cup down. ""For the first time since I was seven years old, I don't feel like I'm running.""

""You never have to run again,"" Alexander said softly, turning to face her. ""You took everything they stole from you and claimed more.""

Elena looked at him, her heart skipping a beat in a way that had nothing to do with fear. ""And what about our deal, Alexander? The ledger is resolved. The syndicate is dismantled. My debt to you is paid.""

Alexander took a slow step toward her, closing the distance until the familiar scent of cedarwood and dark bourbon enveloped her senses.

""You don't owe me a thing, Elena,"" he murmured, his hand gently lifting her chin. ""In fact, I'm the one in your debt. You saved my life on that roof. And you brought light back into this cursed mausoleum.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, placing it on the railing between them.

Elena held her breath. ""Alexander...""
