Chapter 9 - The Phoenix Rises

By dawn, the penthouse atop the De Ville Financial Tower in Manhattan felt like a different universe. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows showcased the sprawling skyline beneath the golden hue of sunrise. Soft classical music played in the background, masking the lethal nature of the operations unfolding within.

Elena stepped out of the private master suite wearing an emerald velvet dress, custom-tailored overnight by Alexander’s personal stylists. Her hair was swept up into an elegant, formidable chignon, her face immaculate, highlighting high cheekbones and fierce, resolute eyes. The fragile housewife on the cold stairs was gone.

Alexander stood before a massive holographic monitor in the center of his study, an unbuttoned dress shirt hiding the heavy bandaging across his ribs.

""The chip has been decrypted,"" Alexander announced as she entered. He turned, his gaze lingering on her transformation with an appreciative glint in his dark eyes. ""Arthur Sterling was a genius. He didn't just log the financial transactions; he left a legal trust.""

Elena walked toward the screen. ""A trust?""

""The five hundred million dollars Julian thought Arthur stole was never stolen,"" Alexander said, clicking a command. A series of legal certifications filled the display. ""It was placed into an escrow trust, compounded over twenty years in Swiss offshore bonds. Today, with accumulated interest, the Sterling Estate is valued at 2.4 billion dollars.""

Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat. ""Two point four billion?""

""You are now the majority shareholder of the logistics firm that supplies Julian’s entire corporate supply chain,"" Alexander said with a cold, triumphant smile. ""In exactly two hours, Julian Vance has a shareholder meeting to announce his merger with Clara Ward's family empire.""

Elena’s heart hammered, but not with fear. For the first time in her life, she felt the intoxicating surge of absolute power.

""He thinks I'm dead, doesn't he?"" she asked.

""He thinks you were killed in the highway collision,"" Alexander confirmed. ""Clara’s father assured him the loose ends were tied up. Julian is preparing to celebrate his victory.""

Elena walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the crawling yellow cabs seventy floors below. ""Let's attend the meeting.""

Alexander walked up beside her, holding out a black leather portfolio containing legal notices of foreclosure and takeover. ""Are you ready to destroy him?""

""No,"" Elena said, her eyes turning to ice. ""I’m ready to bury him.""
