Chapter 2 - The Gilded Arena

Every eye in the grand salon turned toward them. Whispers hissed through the air like venomous snakes. Julian stood frozen at the perimeter, Clara clutching his elbow with painted red nails, her jaw slack in disbelief. Elena felt the floor tilting beneath her designer heels, but Alexander’s grip was an unyielding vice.
""Chin up, Elena,"" he commanded under his breath, voice too low for anyone else to catch. ""Look at them as if they are dust beneath your boots. They smell fear faster than wolves.""
Swallowing the lump of bile and humiliation, Elena lifted her chin. She let her gaze sweep across the glittering crowd, ignoring the sneers and fixing her eyes on Julian. Her husband looked terrified. Julian’s entire tech startup depended on De Ville Capital’s venture funds; one word from Alexander could bankrupt his family name overnight.
Alexander guided her toward the center table, ignoring the socialites parting like the Red Sea. A server rushed over with two crystal flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon. Alexander took both, placing one into Elena's trembling fingers.
""To new beginnings,"" Alexander announced, his deep baritone carrying across the silence. He raised his glass, looking not at the room, but straight into Julian’s hollow eyes. ""And to discarding liabilities that no longer serve us.""
Julian stepped forward, unable to contain his wounded pride. ""Mr. De Ville, please. My wife... she has no idea what she’s doing here. She's emotionally unstable. We were having a private marital disagreement—""
""A disagreement?"" Alexander turned slowly, his expression chilling the room. ""Leaving a woman shivering on cold stone steps is not a disagreement, Mr. Vance. It is a declaration of weakness.""
Clara tried to intervene, plastering on a sweet socialite smile. ""Alexander, surely you aren't letting a girl from the docks dictate your evening? Julian was only trying to protect your guest list—""
""Did I give you permission to speak Clara?"" Alexander cut her off without even glancing her way. He turned back to Elena, offering his arm. ""Come. Let's show them what real royalty looks like.""

He led her toward the private VIP dais, leaving Julian stranded in public disgrace. But as they reached the secluded shadows of the terrace, Alexander paused, leaning against the marble railing. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an icy, analytical stare.
""You played the wounded lamb well, Elena,"" Alexander said coldly. ""Now tell me where you hid the ledger your father stole from my family twenty years ago.""
