Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Machine

Elena reached for the microchip, but Alexander held it out of reach.
""Not yet,"" he said, pushing himself up to sit straight against the metal wall. The color was slowly returning to his face, though the pain remained etched around his eyes. ""The moment we interface this chip with a network, Senator Ward's cyber division will pinpoint our location. We need an air-gapped terminal.""
""Is that really what my father died for?"" Elena asked, staring at the tiny silver locket on the concrete between them. The hinge was broken, just as it had been the day she was pulled from the burning wreckage of her childhood. ""A piece of plastic?""
""It’s not plastic, Elena. It’s an algorithm,"" Alexander explained, his voice low in the quiet hum of the rain outside. ""Twenty years ago, my father discovered that Senator Ward wasn't just skimming public funds. He was running a syndicate—human trafficking, private mercenary contracts, political assassinations disguised as accidents. Your father built a backdoor decryption protocol to expose them all.""
Elena felt an icy weight drop into her stomach. ""If Clara's father is that powerful, Julian was completely out of his league.""
""Julian is a pawn who thinks he's a bishop,"" Alexander scoffed. ""He thought he could trade that chip for a seat at the high table. Instead, Ward sent an execution squad to wipe everyone out. If Julian isn't dead already, he’s running like a rat in a sewer.""
Before Elena could reply, the harsh hum of helicopter blades chopped through the rainy sky overhead. Searchlights swept across the tree branches outside, beam after beam cutting through the cracks of the wooden shed.
Elena jumped up, panicked. ""They found us!""
""No,"" Alexander said calmly, checking his luxury wristwatch, which had illuminated a blinking blue signal. ""That’s my extraction team. They tracked my biometrics.""
He stood up, groaning slightly as his stitched side strained, but his back remained aristocratic and unbowed. He picked up the silver locket and placed it gently into Elena's palm, curling her fingers around it.
""Tonight, you were the victim,"" Alexander said softly, looking deeply into her eyes. ""Tomorrow morning, the whole world watches you become an heiress.""
The shed door was forced open from the outside, revealing six heavily armed security operatives in black combat gear.
""Sir! The area is secure,"" the lead operative reported, lowering his weapon upon seeing Alexander.

Alexander nodded, then turned and offered his uninjured arm to Elena. ""Shall we return to civilization, Ms. Sterling?""
Elena clutched the locket tightly, feeling the cold silver bite into her palm, and took his arm.
