Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

Courtroom 4B was vast and intimidating, illuminated by tall arched windows that let in the pale morning light. Mark and Lily sat at the petitioner's table, flanked by two uniformed federal marshals. The double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with dramatic force. Arthur Vance strode down the center aisle, impeccably tailored in a three-piece charcoal suit, exuding the smug confidence of a prosecutor who had never lost a procedural battle. Behind him walked Ashley, her face carefully painted to look fragile and victimized, flanked by two bewildered county deputies.

""Your Honor,"" Arthur Vance boomed, stepping up to the bar without waiting to be addressed. ""This is an egregious violation of state jurisdictional boundaries. Mark Mercer is a fugitive facing an active felony bench warrant for custodial interference and domestic battery. We demand the immediate surrender of the minor child to her legal guardian, Mrs. Ashley Mercer."" Ashley offered a theatrical, trembling sob, looking toward Lily with outstretched hands. ""Lily, baby, come to mommy..."" Lily shrank back, pressing herself firmly against Mark’s side.

""Sit down, Mr. Vance,"" Judge Hayes said, her voice dropping into an icy register that froze the air in the room. Vance blinked, his rehearsed smile faltering. ""Your Honor, with respect—"" ""I said sit down, counselor, before I have you held in summary contempt,"" Hayes snapped, her gavel coming down with a thunderous crack that echoed off the mahogany paneling. The two county deputies glanced at each other and slowly stepped back toward the wall, sensing the dangerous shift in the room's balance of power.

Judge Hayes turned her gaze toward Ashley, who suddenly looked very small beneath the bench. ""Mrs. Mercer, thirty minutes ago, federal agents executed a search warrant on the Oak Ridge Behavioral Institute in your brother’s district. They seized your email correspondence, financial ledgers, and the advance payment ledger showing a thirty-thousand-dollar deposit made from your personal checking account three days ago."" Ashley gasped, her face turning chalk white. Arthur Vance’s composure shattered instantly. ""Your Honor, those records are privileged!"" he shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic.
