BENEATH THE SILENT MASK / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

For three agonizing seconds, the kitchen fell dead silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator. Ashley’s hand hovered over the manila folder, her knuckles whitening. Mark did not wait. He shoved the closet door open with a violent heave, the wooden bifold panels clattering against the wall frame. He stepped into the light of the hallway, phone held at eye level, camera still pointed directly at Ashley’s face. Lily gasped, stumbling backward until her spine hit the dining chair, her wide hazel eyes darting between the two adults.

""Mark?"" Ashley’s voice pitched high, an instant, sickening attempt at warmth flooding her features. ""Honey, what are you doing in the closet? You're home early."" Her hands moved instinctively to cover the document on the table, trying to slide it back toward the folder. Mark walked toward her, his heavy steps deliberate, vibrating through the floorboards. ""Leave the paper right where it is, Ashley,"" he said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. ""Don't touch it.""

The sudden hostility stripped the pleasantness from her face like peeling old paint. Her lips thinned into a razor line. ""You're acting crazy. Were you recording me? In our own house?"" She lunged toward the table to snatch the application, but Mark slammed his left palm down over the paper, trapping it beneath his calloused hand. His right hand never lowered the phone. The bold text stared back at him: Parental Surrender and Institutional Transfer. At the bottom, on the line marked Father's Signature, sat a crude, looping forgery of his name.

""I forged nothing!"" Ashley hissed, dropping all pretense of innocence as her fingernails dug into the edge of the mahogany table. ""She's sick, Mark! She bruises herself to get your attention because she hates me! If you don't send her away, she will destroy this family!"" Behind her, Lily let out a tiny, wounded whimper. Mark looked at the forgery, then up into his wife’s unblinking eyes. ""Pack your bags,"" Mark whispered. ""Get out of my house."" Ashley laughed—a dry, rattling sound—and pulled her own phone from her sweater pocket, her thumb already dialing emergency services.
