Chapter 13 - The Magistrate's Chamber
The weigh station detour bought Mark twenty precious minutes. By 9:45 AM, he pulled the diesel truck into the underground visitor parking of the Federal District Courthouse in the capital. He carried Lily through the metal detectors, flanked by two armed federal marshals who had been alerted by Frank’s call to Magistrate Hayes’s office. The heavy marble corridors of the federal building were cold and quiet, insulated from the chaos of the outside world.
Magistrate Kathryn Hayes sat behind a broad mahogany desk in her private chambers, her silver hair pulled back tightly, her sharp eyes studying the evidence laid out before her. On the desk lay the forged behavioral contract, the flash drive containing the closet video and dispatch logs, and high-resolution photographs of Lily’s bruised forearm taken that morning by Deputy Miller. Lily sat quietly on a leather sofa across the room, eating a sandwich provided by the magistrate's clerk.

""Mr. Mercer,"" Judge Hayes said, her voice deep and authoritative, ""what your wife and her brother attempted to orchestrate here crosses the line from civil custody dispute directly into felony extortion, institutional fraud, and interstate child endangerment."" She picked up a heavy fountain pen, signing a sealed document with a deliberate stroke. ""This is an emergency federal protection writ. It strips all guardianship standing from Ashley Mercer immediately and places Lily under federal protective custody with you as her designated guardian under federal marshals' protection.""
Mark closed his eyes, an overwhelming wave of relief nearly knocking him off his feet. ""Thank you, your Honor."" Judge Hayes looked up, her expression turning lethal. ""Don't thank me yet. Arthur Vance just walked into the main lobby downstairs with a contingent of county deputies attempting to serve their local custody warrant. They think they can bully this court."" She tapped an intercom button on her desk. ""Marshal Briggs, escort Mr. Vance and his party into my courtroom immediately. It's time to resolve this matter once and for all.""
