Chapter 4 - Evidence in the Dark

Deputy Miller accepted the phone with caution, exchanging a brief glance with his partner. On the screen, the playback started immediately: the clear perspective from the linen closet slats, the audio crisp despite the distance. Ashley’s sharp, abrasive voice echoed through the quiet living room: ""Did you tell your father anything?"" followed by the distinct sound of the folder smacking the table and her venomous declaration: ""Your dad already agreed to this. You leave on Friday."" The officers watched in complete silence as the screen displayed Lily weeping and Ashley leaning in with chilling intimidation.

Ashley’s face drained of color until she looked nearly ghostly under the hallway chandelier. Her mouth opened, closed, and then twisted into an expression of desperate indignation. ""That’s taken out of context! You don't know what she puts me through when he's at work! She's manipulative!"" The younger deputy moved unobtrusively, placing his body between Ashley and the front door, cutting off her exit route. Miller paused the video, his expression hardening as he looked down at Lily.

""Little miss,"" Miller said gently, kneeling to eye level with Lily, ""can you show me your arm again?"" Lily looked up at Mark, who nodded encouragingly with a reassuring squeeze to her shoulder. Slowly, Lily rolled back the left sleeve of her plain white shirt. Beneath the fluorescent light, the mottled bruises stood out stark and unmistakable: deep purple pressure rings consistent with adult finger grips, patterned in cruel clusters along her pale skin. Miller’s jaw tightened. He stood up and turned toward Ashley, unhooking a pair of steel cuffs from his duty belt.

""Ashley Mercer, turn around and place your hands behind your back,"" Miller stated flatly. Panic flared in Ashley’s eyes. ""On what grounds? You can't arrest me based on a planted recording! My brother is the district prosecutor! Do you know who my family is?!"" She spun toward the front entrance, attempting to dart past the younger deputy, but the officer caught her by the elbows, spinning her around and pinning her chest-first against the entryway mirror. The loud click of ratcheting steel echoed through the hallway. As she was escorted out the front door screaming curses, she glared back at Mark through the glass, her eyes filled with venomous promise.
