Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Clause

The heavy silence inside the cathedral was sharp enough to cut skin. Hundreds of guests sat frozen along the mahogany pews, their diamonds gleaming beneath chandeliers that seemed suddenly cold. Clara stood at the head of the center aisle, breathing through the dull ache in her ribs. The dark bruises across her collarbone and the raw scrapes on her forearms contrasted violently against the pristine white lilies lining the altar.
In front of her, Richard Vance’s silver-haired composure had completely collapsed. The wax-sealed document trembled in his manicured fingers, the ancient parchment yellowed by twenty years of calculated burial.
""What does it say, Dad?"" Julianna demanded, clutching the skirt of her custom sweetheart ballgown. Her voice cracked, pitching high enough to carry through the marble hall. ""Have security drag her out! She’s insane!""
Richard did not move to signal the guards. He could not look at Julianna. His eyes were glued to the notary stamp at the base of the page and the blood-type registration dated twenty-three years ago.
""The signature,"" Richard whispered, his voice brittle as dry bone. ""It’s Eleanor’s.""
""It’s not just her signature,"" Clara said, stepping forward until her scuffed boots touched the hem of Julianna's veil. ""It’s the irrevocable deed of trust. The Sterling-Vance empire was never yours to pass down. Mother left every single share, every offshore account, and the title to Vance Manor to her surviving flesh and blood. You declared me dead in a ditch after that fire to take it all. But I didn't die.""
A chorus of gasps rippled across the high-society crowd. Julianna reached for her fiancé, Marcus, looking for reassurance, but Marcus took a deliberate step backward, staring at Clara with a look of terrified recognition.
Richard looked up, his jaw slack, eyes hollow with dread. ""Clara... how did you survive?""
May you like
Clara gave a cold, thin smile. ""You should ask the man standing right behind you.""
Suddenly, the side doors of the sanctuary slammed open with a deafening crash.
