Chapter 8 - The Voice on the Tape

Victor stood guard at the tree line, watching the distant glow of the inferno while emergency sirens wailed across the valley. Julianna lay curled on a blanket inside Victor’s unmarked SUV, shivering uncontrollably, her ruined wedding dress soaked in muddy ditch water.

Clara sat in the front passenger seat. With steady, soot-streaked fingers, she pressed PLAY on the cassette recorder.

The tape hissed with magnetic static for several agonizing seconds before a woman’s soft, trembling voice filled the vehicle.

“If you’re listening to this, Clara... it means Victor kept his promise, and you survived.”

Clara closed her eyes, tears cutting clean paths through the soot on her cheeks. It was her mother. Hearing Eleanor’s voice after twenty years felt like a physical blow to her chest.

“I don’t have much time. Richard discovered the transfer of deed. He thinks I betrayed him for money, but the truth is far worse. He is not your father, my darling. Your father was Arthur Reed.”

Julianna gasped from the backseat, sitting bolt upright. ""Marcus’s father? That’s... that’s impossible!""

The tape continued, Eleanor’s voice growing weaker against background noises of splintering wood and wind:

“Arthur and Richard were partners in the original founding of the syndicate. Arthur tried to stop Richard from privatizing the offshore holdings. When Arthur threatened to go to the authorities, Richard had his car run off the coastal highway. Arthur died thinking I had abandoned him. But I was pregnant with you, Clara. You are the sole legal heir to both the Vance estate and the Reed controlling interest. That is why they will stop at nothing to kill you. If you survive, find Arthur’s attorney in Boston. His name is—”

The audio cut off abruptly into high-pitched static, swallowed by the roar of an explosion on the vintage tape.

Clara stared at the glowing dashboard in stunned silence.

The pieces fell together with sickening clarity. Marcus wasn't trying to save a merger. He was trying to eliminate the true heir to his own family's empire before she discovered who she really was.

Victor turned from the tree line, his expression stone cold. ""We have company coming up the private road. Three black SUVs. No headlights.""
