Chapter 4 - The Whispering Vault

By dusk, the grand estate of Vance Manor was desolate. Police tape fluttered across the iron gates, and the wedding caterers had fled, leaving half-poured glasses of vintage Dom Pérignon standing on linen tablecloths beneath the fading light.
Clara sat in Richard’s leather armchair inside the mahogany library, an ice pack pressed against her bruised shoulder. Victor stood by the arched window, smoking a thin cigarette while rain began to lash against the glass.
""You should have let the marshals take his phone,"" Victor said without turning around. ""He transmitted a wipe code before they took him down.""
""It doesn't matter,"" Clara answered, her voice tired but resolute. She set the ice pack down and rubbed the deep purple discoloration along her jaw. ""The digital footprint is gone, but the physical ledger still exists. Richard was too arrogant to burn everything. He kept trophies.""
A quiet knock sounded at the double doors. Julianna entered, still wearing her crumpled wedding gown, the hem now caked in wet garden mud. Her veil was gone, her hair tangled, her eyes bloodshot and swollen. She looked like a ghost trespassing in her own home.
""Get out of my father’s chair,"" Julianna said weakly, though there was no authority left behind the demand.
Clara didn't move. ""This house belonged to my grandparents before Richard Vance even knew what a dividend was. If anyone is trespassing, Julianna, it’s you.""
Julianna leaned against a bookshelf, trembling from the autumn chill. ""I didn't know. Swear to God, Clara... I thought I was his daughter. I grew up believing you were just an old photograph he kept in his desk drawer.""
""And you never wondered why every painting of my mother had her face painted over?"" Clara asked, leaning forward, her gaze piercing through the younger woman’s crumbling defenses.
Julianna swallowed hard, tears welling in her eyes. ""He said... he said looking at her hurt too much. But that’s not why I came in here.""

She reached into the pocket of her bridal petticoat and pulled out a small, ornate key made of blackened brass.
""He dropped this when the marshals pushed him into the cruiser,"" Julianna said, holding it out with a shaking hand. ""It fits the hidden safe behind the portrait in the cellar. He always told me if the feds ever came... I was supposed to burn whatever was inside.""
