Chapter 5 - The Cellar of Ash

The basement of Vance Manor smelled of damp stone and decades of neglected secrets. Clara led the way down the spiral staircase, a tactical flashlight cutting through the thick layer of dust suspended in the air. Victor followed closely behind, his hand resting on his service weapon, while Julianna trailed several paces back, clutching the heavy skirts of her soiled dress.

At the far end of the wine cellar, behind a vintage rack of 1945 Lafite Rothschild, Clara located the false brick panel Julianna had described. Victor wedged a crowbar into the seam, prying the stone loose with a sharp scrape of mortar.

Behind it sat a reinforced wall safe, its brass keyhole coated in a fine patina of green tarnish.

Clara inserted the blackened key. With a stiff click, the internal tumblers shifted. The heavy steel door swung outward, groaning on dry hinges.

Inside sat no stacks of bearer bonds, no gold bullion, and no encrypted hard drives.

There was only a single metal tin, scorched by intense heat, and a cassette recorder from the early 1990s.

Clara pulled the tin from the vault. Her hands, usually steady under extreme pressure, shook slightly as she pried the charred lid open. Inside lay an old silver locket containing a photograph of Clara as a five-year-old child—and beneath it, a handwritten letter on personalized stationary bearing her mother’s monogram: E.S.V.

""What is that?"" Julianna whispered, leaning over Clara’s shoulder, shivering in the cellar’s chill.

Clara unfolded the paper. The handwriting was erratic, rushed, stained with dark water drops that had wrinkled the fibers years ago.

“If anyone finds this, Richard has already bribed the local fire marshal,” Clara read aloud, her voice tightening with raw grief. “He found the medical records. He knows Clara isn't his child. He knows who her real father is, and he has sworn to burn us both before he allows an outsider to claim the Sterling estate.”

Clara froze. The words seemed to suck the oxygen straight out of the cellar.

Victor stepped forward, his eyes wide. ""What did you just say?""

Before Clara could answer, the cellar door at the top of the stairs slammed shut, followed by the heavy clunk of an exterior deadbolt falling into place.
