Chapter 15 - The Unveiling

One month later, the ruins of Vance Manor were cleared. Where the blackened timber and collapsed chimneys once stood, a vast park overlooking the ocean had been dedicated to the memory of Eleanor Vance and Arthur Reed.
The autumn wind whipped through the towering oak trees, scattering golden leaves across the newly paved stone walkways.
Clara stood at the edge of the overlook, watching the gray waves crash against the rocky shoreline below. She wore a simple dark sweater, her hair blowing free in the breeze, the physical scars on her face now faint silver lines that marked her survival.
Footsteps crunched along the gravel path behind her. Julianna walked up, carrying a small travel bag, a warm wool scarf wrapped around her neck. She looked healthy, the artificial glamour of her former life replaced by a quiet, genuine ease.
""My flight to Heathrow leaves in three hours,"" Julianna said, standing beside Clara and looking out at the endless horizon.
""Did you get everything from the townhouse?"" Clara asked.
""Only the things that belonged to me,"" Julianna smiled faintly. ""I left the jewelry. It belonged to a life I don't want anymore.""
Clara turned to her and reached into her coat pocket, producing a small velvet box. She placed it in Julianna’s hand.
Julianna opened it to find the silver locket from the cellar, polished to a brilliant shine. Inside, opposite the picture of Clara as a child, was a photograph of Julianna on her sixteenth birthday, smiling without any cameras or high-society pressure.
""So you don't forget that you have a sister,"" Clara said gently.
Tears welled in Julianna’s eyes, but this time they were clean, unburdened by fear. She threw her arms around Clara, burying her face into her shoulder. Clara held her tight, feeling the final lingering weight of twenty years of grief lift into the salt air.
Julianna pulled back, wiped her eyes, and smiled. ""Take care of the empire, Clara.""
""It’s not an empire anymore,"" Clara said, watching Julianna walk toward the waiting car where Victor sat at the wheel. ""It’s just a family.""

As the car pulled away down the winding coastal drive, Clara turned back toward the sea. The sun broke through the gray clouds, bathing the water in blinding, untamed light.
She took a deep breath of the cold ocean air, finally free."
