Chapter 14 - The Seedlings of Tomorrow

Spring came to Oakridge with an explosion of wild lupines and lilac blossoms. Willow Cottage was no longer just Clara’s private sanctuary; it had blossomed into a thriving community arts and botanical cooperative called Evelyn’s Haven.

Twice a week, Clara held open classes for local children and adults, teaching them how to harvest plant pigments, press paper, and paint from nature. The greenhouse was vibrant, filled with rows of seedlings that would soon be planted in community gardens across the county.

Thomas had finished building a spacious timber studio adjacent to the greenhouse, with large skylights that let the northern coastal sun pour into every corner.

One afternoon, after the students had washed their brushes and headed home with ink-stained fingers, Thomas brought two mugs of wild mint tea into the studio. Clara was standing before a blank canvas, sketching the rough outline of the harbor at sunrise.

"You look peaceful," Thomas said, handing her a mug.

Clara took a sip, savoring the cool, refreshing taste. "I was just thinking about the day I arrived here on the train with two old suitcases. I thought my life was over, Thomas. I thought I had broken into pieces."

"You weren't broken, Clara," Thomas said softly, his hand resting gently over hers. "You were just stripped down to the core so you could build something real."

Clara smiled, interlacing her fingers with his. In his touch, there was no demand, no expectation, and no ownership—only warmth, companionship, and profound respect.
