Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Citadel

Miles away, within the pristine silence of the Sterling manor, breakfast was served with customary chill. Julian sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, Clara’s empty chair opposite him staring back like an accusation.
"You are embarrassing the family, Julian," Victoria said coldly, cutting her melon with mechanical precision. "She took two suitcases of worthless rags. She has no career, no family fortune, and no allies. By Friday, her pride will run out, and she will call to negotiate."
"She didn't ask for a settlement, Mother," Julian countered, his voice cracked with lack of sleep. "She didn't take the car. She signed the unilateral waiver on the prenuptial trust before she walked out. She took nothing."

Julian looked around the table at his mother and siblings. And he had allowed it. He had stood by while his mother chipped away at Clara’s soul, convinced that luxury was an adequate compensation for emotional starvation.
"She isn't coming back," Julian murmured, staring at his untouched coffee.

"Then she is irrelevant," Victoria commanded, her tone brooking no dissent. "We announce an amicable separation due to lifestyle divergence. We protect the Sterling capital. End of discussion."
Yet as Julian looked up at the mezzanine balcony where Clara had taken her final bow, the grand foyer felt emptier than a tomb.
