Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Loneliness

Back in the metropolis, Julian’s life was unraveling in slow motion. The non-disclosure agreement Clara had returned with a slashed line lay on his polished executive desk.

Elena entered his office, tossing a high-society gossip column in front of him. "People are talking, Julian. Clara was spotted in some backwater village selling crafts at a street fair. Victoria is furious. She says it makes us look bankrupt if your former wife is living like a pauper."

Julian didn't look at the article. "She isn't living like a pauper, Elena. She's living like someone who would rather freeze than spend another second in this family."

"We offered her millions!" Elena snapped. "She is behaving like a spiteful child."

"No," Julian said, his voice dropping into a hollow realization that chilled his sister. "She is the only person who ever told us the truth. We are the ones who are hollow, Elena. Look at us. We calculate every friendship, we measure our worth by balance sheets, and Mother controls every breath we take."

Elena scoffed, though her eyes betrayed a glimmer of unease. "Mother built this empire."

"She built a cage," Julian whispered. "And Clara had the courage to open the door."

Later that night, Julian bypassed his luxury penthouse and drove to his mother's estate. Entering the grand parlor, he saw Victoria sitting under the chandelier, inspecting guest lists for an upcoming charity ball with military detachment.

"Mother," Julian said, standing in the doorway. "I am stepping down as vice-chairman of Sterling International."

Victoria barely lifted her gaze. "Do not be dramatic, Julian. You are having an emotional lapse. Go home and sleep."

"I haven't slept in seven years," Julian said, his voice trembling not with anger, but with profound sadness. "And for the first time, I see why Clara walked out."
