Chapter 7 - The Lingering Shadows

A month into Clara’s quiet retreat, the reality of the Sterling empire proved that boundaries are rarely respected by the entitled.
A sleek black luxury sedan parked at the mouth of the cottage path, kicking up dust against the wild hedges. An associate from the Sterling Group's legal division stepped out, briefcase in hand.
"Mrs. Sterling," the lawyer began stiffly, approaching the porch where Clara was trimming dried lavender.
"Ms. Vance," Clara corrected without breaking her rhythm.
The lawyer cleared his throat, pulling out a document bound in heavy cardstock. "Mr. Julian Sterling has authorized me to deliver this proposal. While you waived claims under the original prenuptial agreement, the family acknowledges your years of service. Mr. Sterling offers this generous stipend and an apartment in the capital, contingent upon a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement regarding your time in the household."
Clara looked at the document. The dollar figure at the bottom was staggering—more money than she would ever earn in several lifetimes at Willow Cottage. It was the Sterling playbook: buy silence, purchase control, and rewrite history so that Victoria Sterling’s reign remained unblemished.
"Years of service," Clara repeated, tasting the absurdity of the phrase. "Tell me, counselor, does Julian believe my silence has a price, or is it his mother who cannot bear the thought of someone walking away from her court for free?"
"It is a legal resolution to ensure peace for all parties," the lawyer parried defensively.
Clara took the pen offered to her. Without hesitation, she drew a crisp, diagonal line across the signature page, wrote Declined, and handed it back.

"Tell Julian that my peace is not for sale," she stated evenly. "And tell Victoria that her empire does not reach past these hedges."
The lawyer stood paralyzed for a moment, unaccustomed to seeing Sterling fortunes rejected with absolute indifference, before retreating to his sedan.
