Chapter 12 - The Burden of ForgivenessTwo weeks later, the campus had quieted. Tyler Harris had been formally indicted on multiple felony counts, his family’s influence shattered by the overwhelming forensic evidence.

Rachel stood outside the visitor’s pen at the county correctional facility. Tyler sat on the opposite side of the reinforced partition, wearing a dull orange jumpsuit. The smug arrogance was gone; his hair was unkempt, his shoulders slumped, his eyes hollowed by shock.
"Why did you come?" Tyler asked, his voice barely audible through the speaker grille. "To gloat?"
Rachel sat down, clasping her hands on the metal ledge. "No, Tyler. I came because anger is an anchor, and I refuse to carry yours."
Tyler looked away, his jaw trembling. "I had to be first. My father... you don't know him. If I didn't finish top of the class, if I didn't secure the syndicate horses... I was nothing to him."
"That explains your fear, Tyler," Rachel replied with calm firmness. "It does not excuse your cruelty. Goliath was defenseless. Chloe was your friend. You chose to crush others to save your own pride."
Tyler buried his face in his cuffed hands, a ragged sob breaking from his chest. "I ruined everything."

"You ruined your path here," Rachel said softly. "Whether you ruin the rest of your life depends on whether you ever learn to acknowledge the pain you inflict on others. I don't hate you, Tyler. But justice had to be done."
She stood up and walked away, leaving the heavy steel doors behind her.
