Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Vance Dynasty

White smoke billowed through the archway, catching the glittering light of the crystal chandeliers. Screams erupted in cascading waves as men in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests flooded the dining hall, assault rifles drawn and laser sights piercing the fog.
""Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!""
Julian stumbled back from the table, his sneer evaporating into pure, unadulterated panic. ""What is this? Do you know who I am? Call the police commissioner immediately! Eleanor, call William!""
Eleanor sat frozen, her lace dress rustling as she trembled, clutching her diamond necklace as if it could shield her from the storm. ""Julian... what did you do?""
""He didn't do it alone, Eleanor,"" Elena said, standing up with deliberate grace. She reached into her blazer and withdrew a gold federal badge, dropping it onto the linen cloth beside the stained napkin. Special Agent in Charge, Financial Crimes and Counter-Espionage Division.
Julian’s eyes bulged. ""You... you're an auditor. You were an accountant for my shipping lines!""
""I was your auditor because your father's shell corporations were washing cartel money through sovereign ports,"" Elena replied, her voice cutting through the wails of panicked socialites. ""I needed access to the encrypted ledger you kept in your offshore registry. And three minutes ago, when I unlocked my phone, the keystroke transmitter disguised as my engagement ring finished uploading twelve gigabytes of bank accounts directly to the Department of Justice.""
Julian glanced down at the emerald-cut diamond ring on her finger. A faint red LED blinked beneath the central stone before fading completely.
""You b***h,"" Julian snarled, his face contorting with rage. He lunged not toward the exit, but toward the table knife resting beside his plate. ""You ruined my life!""
Before his fingers could wrap around the polished silver, a burly agent tackled him into the table. Glassware exploded in a symphony of destruction. Julian hit the parquet floor with a dull thud, his cheek pressed hard against spilt sauce and broken crystal as zip-ties bound his wrists with sharp clicks.
Elena stood over him, pressing the napkin back to her bleeding temple. ""You ruined your own life the day you thought money made you untouchable.""
The commanding tactical officer, a scarred veteran named Marcus, approached Elena and lowered his rifle. ""Director, we have the perimeter secured. Transport is waiting. But we have a critical problem.""

Elena narrowed her eyes. ""The secondary servers?""
""No,"" Marcus said, glancing anxiously toward the grand double doors leading to the subterranean vaults. ""Julian’s father isn't in the building. And the vault's fail-safe just triggered.""
