Chapter 7 - A Father's Voice

Elena gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white as chalk. She swerved the sedan out of the estate gates, scattering gravel against the stone pillars, and accelerated onto the rain-slicked highway.
""You're a monster,"" she said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, controlled fury. ""You watched me mourn you. You watched me break.""
""I watched you grow,"" Arthur corrected gently, as if discussing a proud academic achievement over breakfast. ""Grief is the finest chisel, my dear. It carved away your softness. It made you the brilliant, lethal investigator who took down Julian in under three years. Julian was a dog who barked too loudly and bit his master's hand. He struck you tonight. Did you really think I didn't see that on the ballroom surveillance? It disgusted me.""
""Don't pretend you care about me!"" Elena shouted over the roaring engine. The wipers slapped frantically against the windshield as rain lashed down in sheets. ""You planted evidence in my home to send me to a federal penitentiary!""
""I planted a choice, Elena,"" Arthur said calmly. The sound of jet engines idling hummed in the background of his call. ""Keller is an old friend of mine. He doesn't want to destroy you. He wants you to come with me. The bearer bonds in your apartment are your share. One hundred and fifty million dollars. Clean. Untraceable.""
""You want me to become a fugitive with you?"" Elena scoffed bitterly.
""I want you to become my partner,"" Arthur replied. ""Julian’s network was only the tip of the iceberg. What I have built spans three continents. Together, with your mind and my resources, no government on earth could ever touch us. But you must leave the badge behind. Keller’s tactical unit will be at your building in five minutes. Take the bonds, exit through the service tunnel behind the laundry room, and a car will bring you directly to the tarmac.""
""And if I refuse?""
There was a long, heavy pause on the line. The warmth drained from Arthur’s voice, replaced by the mechanical coldness of an apex predator.
""Then Keller will do his duty,"" Arthur said softly. ""He will find the bonds, you will be branded a traitor, and you will spend the rest of your youth in an ADX facility. Choose wisely, Elena. Loyalty to a flag that pays you fifty thousand a year, or loyalty to the blood that gave you life.""

The line went dead.
Elena slammed her foot on the accelerator, the speedometer climbing past ninety miles per hour. Ahead, the flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked federal SUVs were already turning onto her street.
