Chapter 10 - Off the Grid

Marcus floored the accelerator, weaving through the narrow side streets of the industrial district until the flashing lights of the pursuing vehicles faded completely into the urban deluge.
Elena slumped against the passenger seat, breathing heavily. She pulled off her torn jacket, examining her arm. A graze along her bicep was bleeding steadily, but the bone was intact.
""I thought I told you to take Julian to a safe site,"" Elena said, her voice strained.
""I did,"" Marcus replied without taking his eyes off the road. ""He’s locked in an abandoned water treatment substation under the harbor bridge. But I checked the radio frequencies and heard Keller broadcasting an unsanctioned kill order. I knew you were walking into an ambush.""
""Keller is Arthur’s man,"" Elena said, leaning her head back against the headrest, closing her eyes for a brief moment. ""He was in Arthur's pocket before my father even faked his death. They set this entire night up to clean house.""
""Then we go to the Director of National Intelligence,"" Marcus urged. ""We present the data we pulled from Julian’s mansion. We lay it all out.""
""With what?"" Elena opened the aluminum briefcase between her feet, exposing the millions in bonds and the fake passport. ""They have my home sealed off. By now, Keller’s forensic team has already logged this briefcase as evidence found on my property. On paper, I am a traitor who sold classified shipping routes to criminal syndicates. The DNI won't even grant us a hearing. They’ll put a kill-on-sight notice on both of us.""
Marcus hit the steering wheel in frustration. ""Then what do we do? Arthur’s plane is going to take off!""
Elena checked the dashboard clock. 02:45 AM.
""Arthur hasn't taken off,"" she said with sudden conviction.
Marcus glanced at her. ""How can you be sure?""
""Because of who my father is,"" Elena explained, staring out at the rain-streaked windshield. ""He's a narcissist who believes he's the smartest man in any room. He didn't just want me out of the way. He wanted me to hear his voice, to know he defeated me. And more importantly... the plane at the northern airfield was a decoy.""
""A decoy?""
""Victor Vance said it himself: the physical ledger couldn't be transferred digitally,"" Elena continued, the pieces locking together in her mind with terrifying clarity. ""Arthur’s real prize isn't bearer bonds. It's the master encryption key to the sovereign shipping network. And there's only one place in this city with a private deep-water dock capable of moving that hardware undetected.""

Marcus’s eyes widened. ""The harbor terminal. Vance Pier 42.""
Elena loaded a fresh magazine into her firearm. ""Turn the car around.""
