Chapter 5 - The Seal of Steel

The heavy steel blast door dropped like a guillotine. Marcus hurled himself forward, landing on the cold concrete corridor just as the thousand-pound hydraulic lock engaged with a deafening thud.
Elena hit the ground next to him, dust and pulverized mortar showering over their backs. Inside the vault, the muffled thump of a controlled thermite charge resonated through the reinforced steel, followed by the acrid smell of burning magnesium and melting circuits.
""Elena!"" Marcus coughed, spitting grey grit from his lips. ""Are you hit?""
""I'm fine,"" she wheezed, pushing herself up. The cut on her forehead had reopened, a fresh line of crimson burning as it reached the corner of her left eye. She wiped it away with the back of her hand, leaving a smear of dirt and blood across her pale face.
Behind them, the elevator chimed. Two tactical agents dragged a bruised and handcuffed Julian down the corridor. His formal jacket was torn, his tie ripped off, and his face pale with terror.
""What was that noise?"" Julian stammered, looking at the scorched edges of the blast door. ""Where is my grandfather? Where is Victor?""
Elena stood over Julian, grabbing him by the lapels of his ripped tuxedo and slamming him against the reinforced concrete wall. ""Your father and your grandfather played you for a fool, Julian.""
""What are you talking about?"" he spat, trying to sound defiant, but his voice cracked. ""My father died ten years ago! Victor was paralyzed!""
""Victor was sitting in that chair fully conscious while your uncle Arthur boarded a Gulfstream at the northern airfield!"" Elena hissed into his face. ""You weren't running an empire. You were the fall guy. They left you here to drown under a life sentence while they cashed out three billion dollars in laundered assets.""
Julian stared at her, his eyes darting frantically. ""No. No, Arthur is dead. He died when I took over Vance Maritime... Victor told me...""
""Victor lied to you,"" Marcus interjected coldly, holding up a melted flash drive that had survived the thermal purge. ""And you gave this woman every piece of evidence she needed to bury you for high treason.""
Julian slumped against the concrete, the reality of his betrayal crushing his fragile arrogance. ""He... Arthur has an access code. If he reaches international airspace, the secondary accounts liquidate automatically. Everything is converted into untraceable bearer bonds.""
""Where is the plane going?"" Elena demanded, tightening her grip on his collar.
Julian swallowed hard, his eyes wide with genuine panic. ""He's not leaving the country yet. He can't.""
May you like
Elena’s eyes narrowed. ""Why?""
""Because the physical bearer bonds aren't on the plane,"" Julian whispered. ""They're in your apartment.""
