BLOOD ON THE MARBLE STAIRS / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Descent into Silence

The world ended in a sickening crunch of shattered marble and splintered bone.

Elena did not feel the pain immediately. What she registered first was the weightlessness, the terrifying suspension in mid-air as her bare foot slipped over the curved precipice of the top step. Her maternal instinct bypassed every survival reflex meant to save her own body. In that fraction of a second, she curled inward like a coiled spring, locking her forearms rigidly around the bundle pressed against her sternum. She took the brunt of the violently cascading spiral—elbows fracturing against the wrought-iron balusters, shoulders smashing into stone edges, skull slamming hard against the curved lower landing.

Silence flooded the grand foyer.

A sharp, thin whimper escaped the white cotton swaddle. Leo was alive. His tiny chest heaved against her bruised ribs, miraculous and intact. Elena tried to breathe, but her lungs filled with the metallic tang of agony. Warm, viscous crimson began to pool beneath the crown of her head, spreading across the pristine white marble in slow, deliberate tendrils. Her vision blurred into jagged prisms of light and dark.

Above, the deliberate, measured thud of footsteps echoed down the staircase.

Marianne stood at the edge of the landing, looking down without an ounce of remorse. Her tailored knit sweater remained completely unruffled. She didn't hurry. She descended step by step, her manicured hand gliding down the banister, her gaze cold, calculating, and predatory. She stepped right through the perimeter of spreading blood, stopping beside Elena’s prone body.

Elena tried to scream, to lash out with her foot, but her limbs were dead weights, severing connection with her spine. Her lips parted, producing only a shallow, bubbly rattle.

Marianne knelt. Without sparing a glance at Elena’s dying eyes, she gripped the white cotton bundle.

""You were never worthy of this bloodline, Elena,"" Marianne whispered, her voice devoid of human warmth.

With a chilling, surgical detachment, Marianne pried Elena’s broken fingers away from the cloth. Leo let out a piercing shriek as he was torn from his mother’s failing warmth. Elena clawed the slick marble, her fingernails leaving five crimson streaks against the stone, desperate to hold on.

Marianne turned her back, clutching the screaming infant against her own chest, and walked toward the heavy mahogany front doors. Just before she reached the threshold, the dim glow of the discarded smartphone at the top of the stairs blinked out, and the heavy lock clicked shut from the outside.

Elena lay alone in the dark, her heartbeat slowing to a hollow echo, as the sound of a roaring car engine faded into the night—and then, through the silence of the empty mansion, a heavy footstep sounded from the cellar door beneath the stairs.
