Chapter 14 - The Final Step

""Heart rate is too elevated for biometric confirmation!"" Jonathan shouted, coughing through the thickening toxic smoke. He drew his pistol, firing three heavy-caliber armor-piercing rounds directly into the electronic locking mechanism. Sparks exploded from the housing, but the reinforced titanium deadbolts remained locked.

""Move!"" Elena screamed.

She seized an ornamental bronze halberd mounted on the hallway wall, wedging the sharp, tempered blade into the narrow seam between the vault frame and the door latch. ""Help me!""

Jonathan threw his entire body weight against the bronze shaft alongside Elena. The metal groaned under the impossible torque. Marianne watched from the floor, coughing violently as smoke choked her lungs, her laughter turning into ragged, wet gasps.

With a final, desperate heave fueled by every ounce of adrenaline remaining in their bodies, the deadbolt sheared with an ear-splitting snap.

The heavy vault door swung open.

Elena lunged inside, scooping Leo into her arms. The baby’s skin was hot, his breaths shallow, but the moment he felt his mother’s chest, his tiny fingers locked around her torn collar.

""I have him! Jonathan, we have to move!""

The ceiling above the corridor buckled. Burning timber and molten insulation collapsed in a fiery cascade, crushing the space between the nursery and the roof access.

Jonathan turned toward his mother on the burning floor. Marianne looked up at him through the blinding smoke, her hands clawing weakly at the carpet. For a split second, the son hesitated, reaching an arm toward the woman who gave him life.

""Jonathan, leave me!"" Marianne coughed out, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying finality. ""Don't let her win!""

A massive central beam dropped between them, completely engulfing Marianne in a wall of towering fire.

""Jonathan! The balcony!"" Elena screamed.

Jonathan turned his back on the inferno, grabbing Elena and Leo, kicking through the French doors of the nursery onto the stone balcony hovering fifty feet above the crashing waves of the ocean.
