Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Cellar

Elena broke through the surface, gasping for air that felt like liquid fire against her raw throat. She was dragged out of the pit like a drowned corpse, collapsing onto the wet grass, coughing violently and clutching her bruised chest.

Through the rain, she saw the silhouette of her rescuer. It wasn't an assassin sent to finish the job.

It was Thomas, the reclusive estate groundskeeper who had maintained the Sterling grounds for over thirty years—the man whose existence Marianne treated like background scenery. His weather-beaten face was grim, etched with lines of horror and guilt.

""Breathe, child. Don't make a sound,"" Thomas rasped, his voice barely audible over the thunder. He quickly threw a heavy wool blanket over her shivering form.

""L-Leo..."" Elena sobbed through cracked, dirt-caked lips, trying to crawl back toward the road. ""She took... my baby...""

""If you go back to the manor tonight, they will put you back in that hole, and this time they won't use cheap pine,"" Thomas warned, grabbing her shoulders and lifting her to her feet with surprising strength. ""Marianne owns the police. She owns the coroner. The entire town believes you threw yourself down the stairs and died at the hospital.""

""How... how did you know?"" Elena choked out as he ushered her toward an old utility van hidden behind the cemetery chapel.

""I was in the cellar replacing the boiler fuses when I heard the fight above,"" Thomas whispered, his hands shaking on the steering wheel as the van engine sputtered to life without headlights. ""I saw her through the floor grate. I saw her push you. And when the private cleaners arrived to erase the scene, I took this.""

From his coat pocket, Thomas pulled out Elena's black smartphone. The screen was spiderwebbed with cracks, but the battery indicator still showed seven percent.

Elena snatched the device, her thumb frantically unlocking the screen. She didn't open the dialer. She opened an obscure, encrypted cloud-backup app she had quietly installed months prior. The app displayed a single completed upload timestamped at 11:58 PM: an audio recording of Marianne confessing to the orchestrated murder of Elena's late husband.

Suddenly, headlights flared in the rearview mirror, accelerating fast behind them.
