Chapter 1 - The Trap Closes

The kitchen was dead silent, save for the faint hiss of broth cooling against the glazed ceramic tile. Maya brushed the corner of her swollen lip with the sleeve of her olive sweater, leaving a faint crimson smear on the knit fabric. She stood tall, entirely unbothered by the burn stinging her temples.

Daniel's smug smirk had withered into ash. Behind him, Eleanor dropped the stainless steel pot, the heavy metal clattering loudly across the floor.

""You think you bluffed us?"" Daniel snarled, lunging forward. ""Give me that collar pin. Hand it over, Maya, or you won't leave this estate on your own two feet.""

Maya did not flinch. She simply tapped the small micro-lens concealed in the decorative clasp of her knit collar. A soft red blink pulsed once, then settled into a solid blue glow.

""It wasn't broadcasting to my phone, Daniel,"" Maya said, her tone icy and devoid of panic. ""It was streaming directly to Marcus Cole's secure legal server. And to thirty-four board members of Vanguard Holdings.""

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, clutching her throat. ""Daniel... shut it down! Call security!""

""Too late,"" Maya whispered, stepping backward toward the kitchen island. ""Father knew exactly what kind of vultures you both were when he drafted his final testament. You thought beating me into signing an emergency power of attorney would wipe away his true will.""

Daniel reached inside his tailored jacket, his manic eyes darting between the kitchen doors and the woman he had spent three years tormenting. ""Nobody believes a disowned bastard over the legal widow and the chosen heir.""

""The disowned bastard was named sole executrix twenty-four hours ago,"" Maya stated, a dark, triumphant smile touching her face. ""And every single investor just watched you pour scalding oil over the true owner of Vanguard.""

Daniel’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket, buzzing against the silence like a hornet. Then Eleanor’s phone chimed. Then the landline in the marble foyer began to ring incessantly.

Daniel looked down at his screen. His jaw went slack. The screen showed an urgent notification from Vanguard's emergency crisis board: Immediate suspension of CEO Daniel Vance pending criminal investigation.

""You're a dead woman,"" Daniel hissed, lunging at her with bare hands.

Maya dodged sideways, slamming the heavy wooden edge of a kitchen stool directly into his shin. He stumbled, cursing in agony. Before he could recover, the front double doors of the villa were kicked open with a thunderous boom.

Heavy tactical boots echoed through the hallway, followed by the unmistakable click of assault rifles being raised. But the men entering weren't wearing police uniforms.
