Chapter 8 - The Shadow Fleet

Maya walked slowly toward the jagged opening where the boardroom's shattered windows used to be. Marcus flanked her, weapon ready, scanning the opposite rooftops for snipers, but the hostile shooter had already vanished into the sprawling concrete maze of Manhattan.

Below them, the city moved in ignorant bliss, yellow cabs crawling through the streets like insects. But on the Hudson River, something unnatural was happening.

Four massive commercial container ships bearing the Vanguard maritime logo had dropped anchor in the center of the shipping channel, directly blocking the port's primary exit. Dark gray smoke began billowing from their lower cargo holds, triggering coast guard sirens that drifted faintly up to the sixty-fourth floor.

""Marcus,"" Maya said, her voice hollow. ""What is on those vessels?""

Marcus pulled out his tactical phone, punching in security codes. His face drained of all color as the maritime manifest decoded on his screen.

""Those aren't commercial goods,"" Marcus whispered in horror. ""Those are Arthur's strategic reserve tankers. They’re carrying thirty million gallons of refined liquefied chemical propellant.""

""Julian is holding the entire harbor hostage,"" Maya said.

""Worse,"" Marcus replied, his voice trembling for the first time. ""He's broadcasting an automated distress signal claiming Vanguard’s corporate server triggered an intentional valve release. He’s framing you for catastrophic ecoterrorism. The federal government will seize every single corporate asset by noon.""

Maya turned away from the window, her jaw set like stone. ""Where is he broadcasting the command signal from?""

""The transmission originated from Arthur's private estate in the Adirondacks,"" Marcus answered. ""The mountain retreat your father built thirty years ago.""

""The place where he allegedly hid Julian’s body,"" Maya realized, piecing together the fragmented past. ""Julian didn't run to Asia. He’s been hiding in my family's private sanctum all along.""

""It's a fortress, Maya. Underground bunkers, private anti-air defense, an independent power grid. If you go there, you're walking into a meat grinder.""

""He murdered Henderson, he turned Daniel into a pawn, and he disgraced my father’s life,"" Maya said, picking up Daniel’s discarded weapon and checking the magazine. ""Get the helicopter ready. We take this war to the mountains.""
