Chapter 15 - The New Dawn

The air was heavy with cordite and burning paper. Marcus lay crumpled against the far wall, conscious but entirely incapacitated, blood trickling from his ears, his vision destroyed by the blast. He groaned weakly, unable to raise his arms.

Maya pushed herself up from behind the steel safe. Her ears were ringing with a high-pitched whine, and her face was covered in soot, but she was alive.

She walked deliberately through the smoke toward the credenza.

The auxiliary terminal, powered by an independent internal cell, was still glowing.

00:24... 00:23...

Julian was propped up against the fireplace, clutching his wounded shoulder, breathing heavily. He looked up at her through the haze, saying nothing.

Maya reached out her blackened hand. Without a single hesitation, she pressed the mechanical key for OPTION B.

A low hum resonated through the subterranean chamber.

DECLASSIFICATION ZERO CONFIRMED.

ABORT SIGNAL TRANSMITTED TO HUDSON FLEET.

GLOBAL ARCHIVES UPLOADED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN.

On the screen, an aerial telemetry feed showed the four massive Vanguard tankers in the Hudson River venting millions of cubic feet of harmless white steam into the sky, their engines cutting power simultaneously. At the same exact moment, sixteen thousand gigabytes of hidden corporate records, offshore accounts, and syndicate manifests blasted across every major news network, regulatory agency, and open-source intelligence hub on the planet.

Vanguard was dead. Arthur Vance's empire was finished.

Maya dropped the heavy weapon onto the desk with a dull thud.

The heavy steel doors at the end of the corridor finally yielded, kicked open by federal tactical units with flashlights cutting through the thick smoke.

""Federal agents! Put your hands up!"" voices barked through the mist.

Maya did not run. She stood tall in the center of the ruined bunker, wiping the blood and soot from her face, her eyes calm and unwavering.

Julian closed his eyes, a faint, peaceful smile touching his scarred lips as the agents surrounded them.

Marcus was dragged up in handcuffs, his broken voice spewing curses that were swallowed by the commotion.

Maya walked past the armed officers, past the ruins of her father’s legacy, and up the concrete steps into the crisp, biting mountain air.

Dawn was breaking over the Adirondack peaks. The golden sunlight cut through the gray autumn mist, warming her bruised face. She owned nothing now. No corporate title, no phantom billions, no stolen empire.

She was finally free."
