Chapter 11 - The Bitter Truth

""You think this is about money?"" Julian asked, resting his hands flat on the desk. ""You think I spent forty years living in the shadows of Macau and Zurich just to steal back a few billion dollars of paper equity?""
""You're an extortionist,"" Maya said, her finger steady on the trigger. ""You tried to kill Daniel, you killed Henderson, and you're ready to poison the eastern seaboard to satisfy your ego.""
Julian let out a dry, rasping laugh. ""Arthur really did paint me as the devil, didn't he? Did he ever tell you why he built Vanguard Tower? Why he stockpiled thirty million gallons of propellant?""
Maya kept silent, her eyes darting to the electronic control console sitting on the credenza to Julian's left. The screen displayed four digital arming codes, synchronized to a ticking countdown timer: 14:22... 14:21...
""Arthur didn't build an empire, Maya. He built a syndicate,"" Julian said, standing up slowly. Maya raised her weapon slightly to track his chest, but he merely walked to the fireplace. ""Forty years ago, Arthur and I discovered the truth about the international shipping cartels. They were trafficking more than oil. Arthur wanted to monetize it. I wanted to burn it.""
""You expect me to believe you were the righteous brother?"" Maya scoffed.
""Believe whatever helps you sleep at night,"" Julian replied coldly. ""Arthur locked me in this very mountain bunker, set fire to the ventilation shaft, and stole the corporate charter. I survived by crawling through two miles of unmapped drainage pipes. I spent four decades dismantling his dirty networks from the outside.""
""Then why target me?"" Maya demanded. ""I didn't steal your life.""
""Because you accepted his crown,"" Julian said, turning to face her with ferocious intensity. ""The moment you signed that probate acceptance in Zurich, you became Vanguard. You inherited his sins, his blood-money, and his debts.""
""I'm tearing Vanguard down from the inside,"" Maya fired back. ""The board is dismantled. Daniel is in custody. Eleanor is ruined.""
Julian stepped closer, completely indifferent to the weapon in her hands. ""Then tear it down completely. Input the abort code on that console, and the tankers will vent harmless steam. But doing so triggers an automatic public data dump that will destroy your father's name forever. Arthur Vance will be remembered as a monster.""

Maya glanced at the flashing red terminal. The timer read 10:05.
""Choose, little heiress,"" Julian whispered. ""Protect his saintly lie, or let the truth burn the world.""
