Chapter 13 - The Hand That Pulled the Strings

Marcus stood motionless in the center of the bunker, his rifle hanging loosely against his tactical sling. The warm glow of the fireplace flickered across his weathered face, casting sharp, predatory shadows over his eyes.
""Arthur was a visionary, Maya,"" Marcus said, his tone shifting entirely. The frantic loyalty he had displayed for three weeks evaporated like mist, replaced by cold, calculating authority. ""He understood that someone had to govern the shadow economy. Without Vanguard's clearinghouse, thirty multinational corporations collapse by midnight.""
On the floor, Julian wheezed, blood soaking through his wool sweater, but a dark, grim laugh escaped his throat. ""I told you... didn't I, niece? Marcus wasn't Arthur's lawyer. Marcus was the architect.""
Maya backed away toward the console, keeping Marcus in her peripheral vision. ""You orchestrated Daniel's attack. You let him beat me, you let Eleanor pour the broth...""
""Daniel was an undisciplined dog who got greedy,"" Marcus replied dismissively. ""I needed you angry. I needed you to step into Arthur’s shoes and activate the executive bypass. The system would only recognize Arthur's biological heir. Daniel couldn't unlock Sector Nine. Only you could.""
""You used me to bypass the Zurich firewall,"" Maya said, nausea rising in her throat.
""And now, you will hit Option A,"" Marcus commanded, raising his sidearm and pointing it directly at Maya's chest. ""We sacrifice the tankers, blame Julian’s rogue faction, collect eighty billion dollars in sovereign emergency insurance, and Vanguard emerges untouchable.""
The countdown on the terminal chimed loudly: 02:30... 02:29...
""And if I refuse?"" Maya asked.
""Then Julian shoots you in a tragic domestic dispute, I eliminate Julian in self-defense, and I enter the override as the court-appointed trustee,"" Marcus said calmly. ""It's clean. It's legal. And nobody will ever question it.""
Maya looked down at Julian, whose eyes met hers through the haze of pain. In that split second, an unspoken understanding passed between them.
""You forgot one thing, Marcus,"" Maya said, her hand resting firmly above the keyboard.
""What is that?""
May you like
""My father didn't just teach me how to read financial records,"" Maya whispered.
With her left hand, Maya hit the red emergency power breaker beneath the desk, plunging the bunker into pitch-black darkness.
