Chapter 12 - Cornered at Runway Nine

The storm clouds broke over the municipal airfield, drenching the runway in a torrential downpour. Eleanor Vance paced inside the luxury terminal hangar, clutching a leather briefcase containing twenty million dollars in bearer bonds.
Outside, the twin-engine Gulfstream sat with its turbines whining, waiting for taxi clearance that refused to come.
The hangar’s reinforced steel roll-up door suddenly groaned, buckling inward as three heavy tactical trucks rammed through the barrier. Eleanor dropped her umbrella in shock as dozens of armed federal agents and Sterling contractors secured every exit within seconds.
Arthur walked through the rain, his coat soaked through, his injured arm resting in a makeshift sling. Beside him walked Clara, her sheriff's badge pinned securely to her chest, accompanied by two federal marshals.
""Arthur,"" Eleanor gasped, her aristocratic composure instantly crumbling. ""You don't understand... Julian threatened me. He forced me to sign those transfers.""
""Julian was a coward,"" Arthur said, stopping five feet from her. ""He didn't have the stomach to cage a child in a dog carrier. That was Martha’s idea, wasn't it? And Martha reported directly to your trust foundation.""
Eleanor backed against the nose wheel of the jet, her eyes wild. ""You can't prove anything. The trust documents were incinerated at the rectory!""
Clara stepped forward, holding up a transparent evidence bag. Inside was the water-damaged, scorched ledger retrieved from Timothy's drop box. ""Martha kept personal logs, Eleanor. Every wire transfer. Every photograph she sent you of Blair’s 'punishments' to verify compliance before release of funds.""
Eleanor’s face drained of all color.
""You took my daughter from me,"" Arthur said softly. ""You let her die alone, thinking I didn't care. And then you tried to break her child.""
""Arthur, please!"" she begged, tears of terror finally spilling down her cheeks. ""We were partners for twenty years!""
May you like
""You were an employee,"" Arthur corrected coldly. ""And you are dismissed.""
Federal marshals snapped steel cuffs around Eleanor’s wrists, dragging her into the rain.
