Chapter 13 - The Reckoning

By noon the following day, the corruption ring that had strangled the county collapsed entirely.
Sheriff Lawson was arrested in his office by state investigators, his badges stripped in front of local press. Judge Caldwell resigned under threat of immediate federal indictment for racketeering, child abuse conspiracy, and judicial bribery.
Sister Martha and Father Timothy were transferred to maximum-security holding cells without bail.
In the pediatric wing of the university hospital, far removed from the county’s reach, Blair sat by a sunlit window. She wore a soft yellow dress chosen by Clara. Her cheeks had regained a faint hint of pink, though she still spoke in quiet, measured tones.
Arthur walked into the room carrying a large silver platter covered with a glass cloche. He placed it gently on the low table in front of her.
""What is that?"" Blair asked, her eyes wide with cautious curiosity.
Arthur lifted the cloche. Beneath it sat a small, freshly baked strawberry cake, covered in whipped cream and chocolate stars, completely intact.
""It’s yours,"" Arthur said softly. ""All of it. You can eat it now, or you can save it for tomorrow. No one will ever take it from you. No one will ever make you beg for food again.""
Blair looked from the cake up to Arthur’s eyes. A single tear tracked down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't born of terror. She took a tiny piece of strawberry with her fork and held it out toward him.

""You first, Grandpa,"" she whispered.
Arthur swallowed the lump in his throat, leaning down to accept the bite, feeling the weight of five years of sorrow begin to lift from his chest.
