Chapter 3 - The King Arrives

The gates of St. Jude’s Cemetery did not yield slowly; they shattered under the reinforced steel bumper of the bespoke Suburban. Iron bars sheared off their hinges, groaning in metal agony as three tons of armored vehicle plowed across the manicured gravel path.

Arthur Sterling stepped out before the dust had settled. At fifty-two, he possessed the broad, intimidating frame of a man who had built an industrial empire through sheer, uncompromising force. Behind him, four private contractors in unmarked black tactical gear fanned out, their suppressed carbines held at low-ready.

""Find my granddaughter,"" Arthur said without raising his voice.

The lead contractor, Jax, nodded once. Jax was a scarred veteran whose loyalty to the Sterling name was forged in desert firefights a decade ago. ""Thermal sweep shows three heat signatures behind the crematorium structure. Movement is erratic. Looks like an altercation.""

Arthur didn't wait for tactical formation. He strode down the central lane of marble monuments, his long wool coat flaring in the evening wind. For five years, he had believed his estranged daughter had perished alone in an overseas hospital. For five years, corrupt local courts and a falsified birth registry had hidden the existence of his bloodline in this backwater valley.

A gunshot cracked against the hillside.

Arthur broke into an all-out sprint. As he cleared the corner of the shed, he took in the scene in a fraction of a second: Deputy Clara Vance was on the ground, bleeding from the temple, wrestling one groundsman for control of her service weapon. The second groundsman held an iron bar over her.

""Drop it,"" Jax’s voice barked from ten paces back.

The man with the bar hesitated, turning toward the sound. Jax didn't fire a warning shot; a single beanbag round from his tactical shotgun collapsed the attacker's knees instantly.

Arthur didn't look at the fallen men. His eyes locked onto the white plastic pet carrier sitting in the mud. Inside, a pair of terrified hazel eyes looked back at him.
