Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Thread

Arthur shielded Blair, motioning for Clara to guide her into the waiting car. ""What happened?""

""It’s Eleanor,"" Jax reported, his jaw tight. ""She was being transferred to the federal detention facility in Danbury twenty minutes ago. The transport van was ambushed on Route 8. Two officers are down. Eleanor is gone.""

Arthur looked back at the armored car where Blair was waving cheerfully through the tinted window, holding her teddy bear. The nightmare was supposed to be over; the legal battles were won, the assets seized, the corrupt officials stripped of power.

""Who hit the transport?"" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy calm that preceded total war.

""Forensics found shell casings bearing a custom private military contractor stamp,"" Jax replied grimly. ""Not domestic. The extraction was carried out by the Moreau Cartel out of Marseille. It seems Julian didn't just borrow money from local trusts to hide Catherine's baby—he laundered fifty million dollars of cartel revenue through Sterling Maritime’s European port terminals.""

Arthur’s hand closed into a white-knuckled fist inside his coat pocket. Eleanor hadn't just been trying to steal an inheritance; she was the custodian of the cartel's primary laundering ledger, and Blair was the only living key to the biometric trust accounts holding the remaining funds.

Arthur turned his gaze toward the open highway ahead, his eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising resolve.

""Cancel the New York residence,"" Arthur commanded Jax, his voice hard as tempered iron. ""Fuel the flagship yacht. Deploy Strike Teams Alpha and Bravo to the island redoubt. If they want my granddaughter's bloodline...""

He stepped into the car, pulling the door shut with a heavy, armored thud.

""...they will have to burn the Atlantic to get to her."""
