Chapter 9 - The Fortress

""Then we don't leave the state,"" Arthur said, standing up. ""We buy it.""

By 3:00 AM, Arthur had purchased the entire sixty-acre estate directly across from the county judicial line—a fortress-like compound formerly owned by a foreign consulate. Because the deed was finalized through an international subsidiary with diplomatic covenants, the property grounds were legally immune to local municipal search warrants for forty-eight hours.

A convoy of four identical armored ambulances moved Blair under heavy escort before sunrise. As the vehicles cleared the city limits, squad cars from Caldwell’s jurisdiction tailed them at a distance, their cherry lights flashing, unable to intervene without a signed governor's warrant.

Inside the estate's library, Arthur laid out the scorched documents Jax had recovered from the rectory’s lockbox. Clara sat opposite him, scanning each page through forensic text-recovery software.

""Look at this,"" Clara pointed to an illuminated paragraph. ""Julian didn't act alone. He had a silent partner who drafted the trust amendment. The signatory isn't a lawyer—it’s an alias: 'Vesper.'""

Arthur stared at the cursive script. A sudden, sharp realization hit him. That handwriting belonged to someone he had trusted for twenty-five years—his chief legal counsel, Eleanor Vance, Clara’s estranged stepmother.

""She didn't just help Julian,"" Arthur said through gritted teeth. ""She orchestrated Catherine's relocation to that rural clinic where she died.""

Suddenly, the compound’s perimeter alarms shrieked. A power failure plunged the entire estate into pitch darkness. The backup generators sputtered, coughing once before falling dead silent.
