Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Grid

A deafening pop echoed through the chamber as the emergency circuit breakers blew. In the pitch-black subterranean bunker, the rustle of tailored wool and the sharp click of drawing hammers signaled pure instinct.

""Nobody move!"" Nikolai’s roar cut through the rising panic.

He didn't draw his firearm toward the dark; instead, he stepped silently backward against the reinforced concrete wall, shielding his blind spots. The red emergency auxiliary lights hummed to life seconds later, bathing the room in a bloody crimson hue. Every lieutenant held a gun drawn, barrels pointed in erratic directions across the table. Trust had evaporated entirely.

""Look at the console,"" Elena whispered, her voice trembling for the first time.

The large screen behind the head of the table had rebooted, but the surveillance loop was gone. In its place stood a live camera feed of the estate’s upper residential wing. The camera angle was from inside the ventilation shaft looking directly down into Mia’s bedroom. The little girl was asleep, Clara sitting beside her bed with a storybook in hand.

A red laser dot appeared on the screen. It rested squarely on the middle of Mia’s yellow blanket.

""Check the comms!"" Viktor shouted, slamming his palm against the wall unit. ""Security team three, respond! We have an active visual on the nursery!""

Static was the only response. A digital voice, heavily modulated and stripped of human inflection, crackled over the intercom speakers: “A king who fights for an empire loses his home. A king who fights for his home loses his empire. The ledger must be balanced tonight, Nikolai.”

""Who are you?"" Nikolai barked into the microphone.

“Ask the man standing at your right hand.”

Every head snapped toward Viktor. The lieutenant’s eyes widened, his skin paling beneath the crimson glow. Before he could speak, the fire-suppression vents along the ceiling hissed violently, releasing a dense, choking cloud of white chemical vapor into the enclosed space.

Coughing and shouts erupted as visibility dropped to zero within seconds. Nikolai dropped low to the floor where the air was clearer, lunging forward toward the exit hatch. In the blinding fog, gunshots cracked—two rounds fired in rapid succession, followed by the heavy thud of a body collapsing against the floorboards.
