Chapter 10 - The Double Helix

The woman standing across the room spun around, her weapon leveling toward Nikolai with terrifying speed.

Nikolai fired instantly, but the woman twisted sideways, taking the round through her shoulder as she lunged behind the heavy steel server rack. Her movements were unnaturally fast, devoid of hesitation or pain.

""Clara, grab Mia!"" Nikolai commanded, shifting his footing to cover the corner while keeping his boot pressed onto Marco’s chest.

Clara scrambled forward, scooping the little girl into her arms and ducking behind the reinforced titanium frame of the vault door. Mia buried her face into Clara's neck, trembling as gunfire erupted again.

""Who is she?"" Nikolai barked down at Marco, digging his heel harder into the man’s sternum.

""Helena..."" Marco choked out, gasping for oxygen. ""Her twin sister... Sarah’s identical twin. Sarah died in Palermo, Nikolai! Truly died! Helena was the operative who survived the crash! She spent four years learning Sarah’s voice, her habits, her tactical profiles... all to get inside your network!""

Behind the server rack, Helena’s voice drifted out, no longer imitating Sarah’s warm undertones, but carrying a sharp, Slavic cadence. ""He’s right, Nikolai. Sarah was weak. She fell in love with a crime boss and forgot her mission. But I didn't forget. Our agency spent ten years trying to dismantle the Volkov empire. Sarah compromised everything for a baby.""

""You used my daughter's memory of her mother to breach my home,"" Nikolai said, stepping off Marco and advancing slowly toward the server corridor, his weapon raised.

""I used what worked,"" Helena mocked from behind the metal stacks. ""And now, the real payload is already delivered. The server in this room isn't storing your bank accounts anymore. It's broadcasting every offshore routing number to international authorities right now. In ten minutes, the Volkov empire is frozen globally. You are finished.""

Nikolai didn't pause. He rounded the corner, firing three rapid rounds into the shadows. Sparks flew from the server casing, but Helena had already slipped through the emergency vent grate at the back of the bay.

""Nikolai, let her go!"" Clara shouted from the vault entrance. ""The server is rigged with an incendiary charge! She set a fail-safe!""

A high-pitched digital beep echoed through the subterranean room, counting down from sixty seconds.
