Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Docks

The maintenance conduit was a claustrophobic tunnel of exposed pipes, industrial wiring, and cold steel. Nikolai moved through the damp crawlspace with lethal haste, Sarah keeping pace directly behind him. The air smelled of ozone and hot engine grease as the primary generators pushed auxiliary power into the compound’s sub-levels.
""Marco has been skimming from the shipping manifests for eighteen months,"" Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the cooling fans. ""I tracked the shipments through shell companies in Cyprus. He wasn't just stealing money, Nikolai. He was laundering weapons for a private military contractor based out of Eastern Europe.""
""The mercenaries upstairs,"" Nikolai deduced, his teeth gritted as he slid down an access ladder into the lower pump room. ""He didn't just want to betray the council. He wanted to wipe out the leadership, take Mia as leverage, and sell the syndicate's distribution network wholesale.""
""He knew Mia was the sole legal beneficiary of your overseas trust funds,"" Sarah added, landing lightly beside him. ""With you dead and Mia under his control as legal guardian, he holds the keys to fifty billion in assets.""
Nikolai stopped at the heavy iron hatch labeled PRIMARY JUNCTION B. He placed his palm against the digital keypad, typing a twelve-digit sequence followed by a manual override twist of the central wheel. The locking pins retracted with a heavy clunk.
He eased the door open an inch. Through the gap, the subterranean vault chamber stretched before them. The massive round vault door was sealed tight, but in the observation anteroom, Marco was pacing frantically. Two armed private contractors in tactical gear stood beside him, watching a bank of monitors. On the floor in the corner, Clara lay unconscious, bound by zip-ties, blood pooling from a nasty laceration on her temple.
Mia was sitting on an equipment crate, clutching her scraped knee. She wasn't crying; she was staring at Marco with the same cold, unyielding defiance that had defined the Volkov bloodline for generations.
""Shut up, you little brat,"" Marco snarled, waving a heavy revolver toward her. ""Your father is dead up there. Nobody is coming to save you.""
""My daddy isn't dead,"" Mia said, her voice steady and clear. ""He's going to kill you.""
May you like
Marco raised his hand to strike her across the face.
Before his palm could descend, Nikolai kicked the heavy iron hatch entirely off its hinges, charging into the room like a juggernaut of pure vengeance.
