Chapter 15 - The Final Debt

The wind from the failing rotor wash whipped Nikolai’s dark hair across his forehead. Debris skittered across the concrete runway. Twenty paces away, Helena slowly rose to her feet, her tactical vest torn, blood dripping from her knuckles. Between them, Viktor lay on the tarmac, gasping for air, his face battered but his eyes wide with recognition.

""It's over, Helena,"" Nikolai said, his voice carrying the finality of a funeral bell. ""Your transport is dead. Your mercenaries are dead. The perimeter is closing.""

Helena wiped blood from her split lip, offering a bitter, humorless smile that looked horrifyingly identical to Sarah’s. ""You think you won, Nikolai? Look around you. Your mansion is burned to the ground. Your inner council is fractured. Half your territory will be in open rebellion by midday.""

""Empires can be rebuilt,"" Nikolai said, taking a slow step forward. ""My family remains.""

""She’s not your family!"" Helena shrieked, her composure finally breaking into unbridled hatred. ""Mia belongs to Sarah! And you killed Sarah the day you brought her into your filthy world! If I can't take the child, neither can you!""

Helena’s hand whipped upward, raising her weapon not toward Nikolai, but directly toward the SUV where Mia sat watching through the cracked glass.

Nikolai didn't hesitate. Two loud cracks shattered the morning silence.

The first bullet struck Helena’s wrist, shattering the joint and sending her firearm spinning across the tarmac. The second bullet took her squarely in the chest, the kinetic impact lifting her off her feet before she crashed onto the hard concrete.

She lay still, her green eyes staring blankly up at the purple dawn sky, the ghost of Sarah finally laid to rest.

Nikolai walked forward, checking Viktor’s pulse before unhooking the key from Helena’s tactical belt and unlocking his lieutenant’s handcuffs. Viktor sat up slowly, clutching his cracked ribs, looking up at Nikolai with profound guilt.

""Boss... I swear to God... I didn't know she was a double,"" Viktor croaked, his voice cracking. ""I thought... I thought Sarah was alive. I thought I was protecting the girl.""

Nikolai looked down at the man who had stood beside him for ten years. ""You broke the chain of command, Viktor. You brought war to my front door.""

Viktor closed his eyes, bowing his head, awaiting the execution shot. ""Do it, then.""

Nikolai lowered his weapon, sliding it back into his shoulder holster. ""Get up. You owe me an empire. You’re going to help me rebuild it from the ashes.""

Viktor’s head snapped up, tears of shock and relief blurring his eyes. He nodded slowly, pushing himself to his feet.

Nikolai turned and walked back to the SUV. The rear door clicked open, and Mia stepped down onto the tarmac, holding Clara’s hand. Her mustard-yellow dress was dirty, her curls tangled by the wind, but her hazel eyes were bright and steady.

Nikolai crouched down, opening his arms. Mia ran straight into his chest, burying her small face into his neck, her tiny arms wrapping tightly around his shoulders.

""Is the bad lady gone, Daddy?"" Mia whispered softly into his ear.

Nikolai held her close, feeling the steady beat of her heart against his chest. ""Yes, little bird. The bad lady is gone.""

As Nikolai stood up, holding his daughter securely in his arms, his phone in his coat pocket began to vibrate with a low, persistent hum. He pulled it out with his free hand.

On the screen was an unknown international number. A single video file was attached, accompanied by a text message that sent a sudden, paralyzing shock through Nikolai's core:

“You killed the double. Now come find the original.”

Nikolai tapped the screen. A live video feed opened, revealing a sterile, white room somewhere across the globe—and sitting in the center, bound to a steel chair, was the real Sarah, looking straight into the lens, mouthing three silent words: Don't trust Clara.

Nikolai’s gaze slowly drifted from the screen to Clara, who was smiling warmly at Mia just three feet away."
