Chapter 1 - The Shattered Cup

The hollow clang of the metal cup striking the marble floor reverberated like a gunshot through the soaring corridors of the Sterling manor. Julian dropped his leather briefcase. The lock snapped open upon impact, spilling confidential merger agreements across the polished stone, but his gaze remained frozen on the figure sprawled beneath the splintered pedestal.

Clara lay completely still, her ivory maternity gown pooling around her bruised knees like crushed satin. A dark, bitter-smelling fluid stained the collar of her dress, glistening against her pale throat. Just feet away, the overturned wheelchair spun on its axle, a faint, rhythmic ticking sound that mocked the sudden, suffocating silence of the foyer.

"Julian..." Evelyn Sterling’s voice cracked, shedding forty years of aristocratic steel in a single instant. Her manicured hand withdrew from mid-air, clutching at the dark lace covering her breast. Her knuckles were stark white, her eyes darting frantically between the spilled liquid and her only son. "Julian, it isn't... you don't understand what she was doing. She was hysterical. I was merely trying to calm her nerves—"

"Quiet," Julian whispered. The word was not loud, but it cut through the room with the sharpness of a razor.

He didn't look at his mother. He moved across the gallery, his tailored beige suit catching the golden glow of the crystal chandelier, his strides long and unsteady. When he dropped to his knees beside Clara, his hands trembled violently, hovering inches above her trembling frame before daring to touch her shoulder. She was breathing in shallow, jagged gasps, her eyelids fluttering beneath beads of cold sweat.

Maria, the maid whose apron was torn at the seam from the scuffle, fell to her knees beside him, sobbing into her palms. "She forced it, Mr. Julian! She held her down... she said the child could never bear your name!"

Evelyn's eyes widened with venomous fury. "Silence, you wretched girl! Pack your things and leave this house before I have you arrested for theft!"

Julian ignored them both. Gently, he slid his arms beneath Clara’s limp frame, lifting her against his chest. Her head rolled back, exposing the violent purple bruising blooming across her jaw where Evelyn’s fingers had dug in to force the vial open.

As Julian stood, he felt a warm, sticky dampness soaking through the thin fabric of Clara’s dress and seeping directly onto his forearm.

He looked down. Crimson streaks were spreading across the pale linen of her skirt. Clara gasped, her hand feebly grasping Julian's lapel, her knuckles white with agonized effort. Her lips moved, barely carrying a voice: "Save... the baby... Julian, the cellar..."

Before she could finish, Clara’s eyes rolled back, and her grip surrendered entirely to gravity.
