Chapter 11 - The Matriarch's Demand

The blinding beam of the searchlight pinned Julian against the yacht’s mahogany superstructure, turning the driving rain into streaks of burning white fire. On the deck of the approaching patrol boat stood Evelyn, clad in an impervious black oilskin coat, her gray hair plastered against her skull by the gale, looking like a vengeful specter summoned from the dark waters.
Two armed security officers flanked her, their rifles raised, red laser sights dancing across Julian’s chest.
"Turn off the auxiliary power and hand over the child, Julian!" Evelyn’s amplified voice cut through the thundering squall. "The hospital is crawling with state police. Vance broke under interrogation. They are looking for an armed fugitive who kidnapped a patient and a critical newborn. Surrender now, and my attorneys can still spin this as a grief-induced psychotic break!"
Julian stepped to the edge of the yacht’s railing, deliberately shielding the cabin door where Clara and the baby lay hidden. He kept his hands visible, but his thumb was hooked into the remote control attached to the yacht's high-pressure fire suppression system.
"You don't care about the baby, Evelyn!" Julian shouted back over the roar of the surf. "You care about the control! You care about the bloodline trust that expires on my thirtieth birthday unless an heir is certified!"
Evelyn’s cold laugh echoed over the water. "Of course I care about the trust! Sixty percent of the Sterling global assets default to the charitable conservatorship if there is no continuous biological successor. You were supposed to secure that transition. Instead, you brought a viper into our bed!"
Inside the cabin, Clara hauled herself against the window frame, her face pale as death. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a cracked, water-resistant thumb drive she had retrieved from Dr. Vance's private office safe before they fled the surgical floor.
She opened the salon window a crack, her voice raw and hoarse: "Julian! The cloud uplink! The ship's satellite dish is still connected to the corporate server! The thumb drive has the full toxicology scan and Vance's audio confession!"
Evelyn heard her. Her face twisted into an expression of unadulterated malice. "Take the yacht! Breach the cabin! Kill the girl if she resists!"
The black patrol boat surged forward, its reinforced rubber bumper slamming violently into the yacht's hull with a sickening crunch of fiberglass. The two armed guards prepared to leap across the narrow chasm of churning black water.
Julian slammed his hand onto the fire suppression panel on the deck console.
Twin nozzles mounted on the yacht’s bridge fired a torrential, pressurized blast of foam and salt water directly into the faces of the boarding team. The sheer force knocked both guards off their feet, sending one tumbling backward into the swirling wake of the twin outboard motors.
Julian dove into the wheelhouse, slammed the dual throttles forward, and engaged the twin 800-horsepower diesel engines.
The yacht’s stern dug deep into the black water, throwing up a massive plume of white spray as it rocketed forward, tearing away from the pier and snapping the remaining shore lines like sewing threads.
The patrol boat spun out in the sudden turbulence, its searchlight wildly sweeping across the empty pier.

Julian steered the vessel out of the protected harbor into the open, violent jaws of the Atlantic storm. But as he glanced at the navigation console, a red warning indicator began to flash frantically:
Fuel Pressure Critical: Port Engine Sabotaged.
