Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The hospital room door slammed against the wall with the force of a battering ram. Dr. Vance jumped back, dropping the syringe to the linoleum floor where the plastic barrel cracked, spilling a clear, deadly neurotoxin across the tiles.
Julian stood in the doorway, drenched in rainwater, the suppressed pistol held steady in his grip, aimed directly between Vance’s eyes.
"Step away from her," Julian commanded, his voice trembling with deadly stillness.
Vance backed up until his spine hit the heart rate monitor, his hands raised in surrender. "Julian... you don't know the whole story. You don't understand what she's holding over me!"
"I found the vault, Vance," Julian said coldly, not lowering the weapon. "I know about Elena. I know what you and Evelyn did twenty-eight years ago. You traded your own sister for the chief of surgery chair and a Sterling endowment!"
Clara let out a ragged sob from the bed, her pale hand clutching Julian's sleeve as he stepped closer. "Julian... the baby... where is she?"
"She's in the incubator room, Clara. She's alive," Julian whispered, keeping his eyes locked on the trembling doctor. "Is she safe, Vance? Or did you tamper with her life support, too?"
"No! No, I swear on my life!" Vance cried, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "The child is stable! Evelyn only ordered Clara's silence! She said the baby would be raised as Julian's sole heir under her direct guardianship—just like you were!"
The grotesque cycle of Evelyn’s ambition hit Julian like a physical blow. She intended to erase Clara, just as she had erased Elena, and raise this new child as another malleable pawn to maintain the family throne.
"Get down on your knees," Julian ordered Vance.
The doctor collapsed to the floor, weeping into his trembling hands. Julian used the medical cord from an unused blood pressure cuff to bind Vance’s hands tightly behind his back, shoving a roll of sterile gauze into the man’s mouth to muffle his cries.
Julian turned to Clara. Her dark hair was matted with sweat, her eyes bruised and sunken, but beneath the vulnerability burned an unyielding, fierce intelligence.
"Is it true?" Julian asked, his voice cracking as he looked down at her. "Are you Elena’s daughter? Did you marry me just to tear my family down?"
Clara looked up at him, tears spilling silently down her pale cheeks. "I came for the truth, Julian. When I found my mother’s journals in that asylum, I wanted to destroy every single person who carried the Sterling name. I wanted to burn your mother's world to ash."
She reached out, her trembling fingers wrapping around his bloodstained wrist.
"But then I got to know you," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You were nothing like them. You were gentle, Julian. You carried the weight of their cruelty on your shoulders without even knowing who you really were. I fell in love with the man who wanted to build a world different from his father's."
Julian closed his eyes, a single shuddering breath escaping his lips.

Before he could speak, the hospital’s emergency broadcast speaker crackled overhead, followed by an announcement that froze the blood in their veins:
"Code Silver. Armed intruder reported on the seventh floor. Security teams, lock down all perimeter exits immediately."
