Chapter 7 - Flight in the Shadows

The rain was an absolute deluge by the time Julian burst through the manor's rear service entrance into the sprawling gardens. Cold drops stung his face, washing away the blood of the security guard that had smeared across his knuckles. The estate's perimeter floodlights flickered to life behind him, casting long, frantic shadows across the sodden lawn.
Sirens began to wail—not the police, but the private security grid Evelyn maintained across the perimeter fences.
Julian sprinted through the hedge maze, his breath burning in his chest. He knew every blind spot in the cameras; he had designed half the estate’s digital upgrades five years ago. He leaped over the low stone wall separating the manicured gardens from the rocky cliffs overlooking the Atlantic.
In the small garage near the boathouse, he found the vintage motorcycle he had kept hidden from his mother since college. He hot-wired the ignition with trembling fingers, the engine roaring to life with a violent, throaty growl.
Blasting through the secondary wooden gates, Julian hit the coastal highway, the heavy bike sliding precariously across the slick asphalt. His suit was soaked through, his vision blurred by the storm, but one thought burned through the agony in his mind: The hospital.
If Evelyn had already coerced Dr. Vance into altering Clara’s medical records, Clara and the baby were completely defenseless. Evelyn wouldn't leave loose ends; she would ensure Clara never regained consciousness to contest the official narrative.
Forty minutes later, Julian abandoned the motorcycle in an alley three blocks from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. He discarded his torn beige jacket, pulling on a dark raincoat he had grabbed from the boathouse.
He slipped into the hospital through the basement laundry intake, avoiding the main lobby where two private security officers in Sterling corporate uniforms were already stationed by the elevators.
Moving like a shadow through the service stairwells, Julian climbed to the seventh floor—the neonatal intensive care unit.
The floor was unnaturally quiet. The lights were dimmed for the night, save for the soft blue glow emanating from the incubators behind the heavy glass observation walls.
Julian crept toward Clara’s private recovery suite at the end of the hall. He peered through the small square window in the door.
Inside, Clara was awake.
She was sitting up in the hospital bed, her face ghostly pale, IV lines running into both arms. Standing over her was Dr. Vance, holding a pre-filled syringe against the light, his hands shaking noticeably.
"I'm sorry, Clara," Julian heard Vance whisper through the heavy door frame. "If I don't do this, Evelyn will destroy everything my family has left. She will expose what happened to your mother."
May you like
Clara stared at him with defiant, tear-stained eyes. "Then do it, Uncle. But you will have to look my daughter in the eyes when she grows up knowing you murdered her mother."
Julian didn't hesitate. He kicked the door open with a thunderous smash.
